Adding USB to E92
Hi all,
I'm looking to add the USB option to my E92. I only really want it for the charging characteristics of a USB outlet. I don't want to connect up and USB stick with songs on or even an iPod. Is it possible to just plug and play it? Cheers! |

You need just a USB adaptor for your 12v socket in the armrest then - no point retro fitting the official USB audio interface as it may not have enough power to charge some devices (e.g. iPhones). Look for a short USB adaptor so it will have enough space for things to remain plugged into the USB sockets with the armrest down, something like this: http://regmedia.co.uk/2012/03/09/car_gadgets_6.jpg

BMW sell a low profile USB/cig lighter.
About £15 or so, no real advantages apart from it's *really* low profile - only protrudes out a couple of MM. Fits in under the armrest perfectly! |

Alright, but let's say you want to add the function to your radio as well. Besides just the usb/aux piece, what else does one need? I'm sure it needs coding, but I'm not looking for details there, just the hardware required. I am looking to ask a fellow member who is parting out. I have Bluetooth phone only, logic 7, and just the aux port in the center console.

You have to be very careful with the Belkin ones as there are a *lot* of fakes out there, and they tend to be the really cheap ones.

^^ as above.
the Griffin ones are also fakery tastic. That said, I've had 2 I bought of eBay, clearly fakes as they were only a couple of quid each, and they've lasted for years and caused no grief to any device or car. To be honest, the only "fake" thing really is that they're not officially "Griffin" ones, just have Griffin printed on them.........which, come to think of it, really probably is all Griffin do anyway! LOL! Maybe the BMW ones are actually fake Belkins.......yeah...get that shit! |
