Issues with drive by wire pedal sensor?
Hey guys I have a 2010 E90 335i 6MT. Last Thursday I was driving and while starting from a stop and going through 1st and 2nd gear, I felt an odd "loss of power". Basically I had to push the pedal much further than normal to get the same throttle response/power that I normally would from just pushing the pedal a much shorter distance.
I immediately feared a HPFP failure was imminent. I took the car to my local dealership and had them check it out (I'd had the injectors and plugs replaced under warranty due to a misfire so I claimed it was a continuing problem and they waived any diagnostic fee). They found nothing wrong with the car - no fault codes and it didn't have the same symptoms when they test drove it. I took the car on a 600 mile round trip over the weekend and learned a good bit more about it. All the power is there and all the fuel economy is there as well. The issue is most evident at low speed driving (going through 1st and 2nd). The odd thing is it doesn't always do it. Sometimes it feels perfectly fine and then sometimes I have to press the pedal almost halfway down just to get going. The best way to describe it is as if the pedal is not "registering" that I pressed it the first 20% of its travel. I suspect the problem is the sensor in the accelerator pedal module. http://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw-...le-35426858575 I don't want to start blindly throwing money at it but it looks like BMW redesigned this part in 2013 and discontinued the old part number. I suspect there was some design defect there that they didn't want to tell us about. It's not a terribly expensive part and I could change it myself but I can't find any info on this and am wondering if anyone else has had this issue. Thoughts? Thanks in advance! |

Not sure but might want to give this a try to reset throttle adaptation:
1. Never touch the break pedal & key remains inserted the entire time 2. Insert key and push START Button 3. Press and HOLD accelerator pedal for 30 seconds (some say 5, some say 25 seconds - I did 30 to be sure). 4. WITHOUT RELEASING THE ACCELERATOR PEDAL, push the START Button 5. Release accelerator pedal 6. Wait full 2 minutes 7. Start car normally

That has happened to me before my water pump completely stopped. Unless there is a "Water pump speed deviation" issue for a certain amount of time (I dunno how long), it will cut power. If the pump is slow or dead for long enough, you get the yellow then red overheat light.
Might be a sign that the water pump is on its way out. You may just have to wait and see on that one, though...

I took it to the dealer and had them take a look at it. They claimed they were receiving no faults but I insisted they keep driving it until they experienced the issue. They finally did and they checked and found that one of the wires to the throttle position sensor was loose. So far (fingers crossed) it seems to have fixed the problem completely! When I got the car back from them, the pedal felt funny in general but was not doing the same problem it had before. I did the reset trick and so far so good! |
