If the hardware is not damaged I think it's fine. I had my DME flashed back to stock for I believe 75 from an independent bmw tech.

If the mosfets are fried, they can be replaced pretty easily.

Post what codes you are getting. If you are getting a 30BB or 30AA, then it's the MOSFETs and repairable as others have mentioned. There is an excellent post here:

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=734162

If you are not up to repairing it yourself, a few of my friends locally found a local TV repair guy to replace the MOSFET for 20-30 bucks. Took him all of 10 minutes to do it. The MOSFETs themselves are relatively cheap as well.

What year is your car? What's your mileage? Depending on that, you might have emissions warranty still on it and as the dme is covered by that, you could get it for free from Bmw. Double check your manual to verify. Up here in Canada, we have 8year/130000km emissions warranty. I just had mine replaced 8 months ago under that. Bmw honoured that and I was out of the regular warranty.

Not sure why they go bad but its more common in 07s and some early build 08s. There was actually a TSB from BMW for the issue at one point. Three of my friends have had the same issue in recent months.
