The first cold snap of sub freezing temperatures struck Georgia this week and as always when it turns cold, something on my cars breaks. I noticed an awful noise when I pulled into the garage last night. It sounds metallic, screeching almost. All I can think of is a bunch of angry birds under the hood. Today both my wife and I noticed puffs of smoke arising sporadically from under the hood while at a stop light. It also feels like low speed (ie off the line) power is down which makes me think the smaller of the sequential turbos is either on the way out or has already sh!t the bed. Please watch the video link I included and let me know if any of you have had similar problems.

The metallic or high pressure squirting liquid sound in the video is what I'm referring to.

I have seen a small piece inside the EGR that broke off and fell back to the turbo. This obviously caused damaged to the turbo and thus the turbo and EGR valve unit had to be replaced. Customer complained of a rattle noise and loss of power.

Huh. Any idea what piece it was? The parts inside the egr valve shouldn't be able to fit through the egr tube based on the design I wouldn't think

Actually, I think it was the exhaust cooler or EGR cooler that the EGR attaches too. A piece of metal inside broke off then went into the exhaust manifold and into the turbine. The car was a F15 X5 35d with abut 8,000 miles.

Thanks for the input. It's under warranty so it's going into the shop today. I will let you all know what they find.

Funny that you should say that, I came outside today and was running the car to look for leaks and there was a small puddle of water under the car and the coolant reservoir was empty. I kept thinking I wonder if this could be the water pump tearing itself apart like the V8 cars water pumps do? What was throwing me is that I guess my red boost pipe is leaking as well, which was drawing me towards a turbo bearing issue.

The car went out on a flatbed to the dealership tonight. I will post back with what they tell me.

How many miles? I know in the E46 era you changed water pumps every 60K miles. On the E46 you could at least SEE it.

Ahaha
Good to know the diesel water pump is pretty cheap comparing to the electrical pump of the gassers N54/55
