SES codes that came up today

Hi everybody,

I had my ses light come on today with 3 different codes that I analyzed and cleared through the iVini app.

They are:

Thermal Oil level Sensor code:00498E

DFC code:00474C

and the active reducing agent tank level sensor code: 004BAC

I know the last one is just because I need to add def fluid but does anybody have ideas for the other 2?

I'm guessing that the Thermal oil level sensor could be bad and might just need to be replaced, but i was thinking of adding some oil and clearing the code to see if that was maybe the issue.

I also honestly don't know what DFC stands for.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Which is the code that triggered the SES Light?
Run a seperate OBD II diagnostics and see what code you have.

I believe the DFC is related to the urea level.
Other 2 codes are sensor related.

That is correct. You have to use another program to find out the code that triggered the SES light. TorquePro or BMWLogger will tell you which code are real or shadow.

The BMWhat apps does not tell you which codes are shadow codes.

Shadow codes are fault that are minor. They will appears and disappears. If the fault is recurring, the shadow codes will become real codes.

It was my impression that only the E70 35d US had a oil level sensor. E90 - dipstick only.

Well I topped off the def fluid a month ago and active reducing sensor tank code went away.

But the service engine soon light came back on the other day with the same active reducing agent code so im considering doing a flush of the system.

I tried to remove the plate in the trunk to see if I could get at the passive tank through the panel to see if I could pull out one of the sensors and clean it but the panel doesn't come off after I have removed all the bolts and pried at a bit

anybody know why?

Im considering either just filling up the tank with more def fluid but I think this is just a temporary solution and I really want to run some water through the tank instead. Has anybody flushed their def tanks with water?

If so how did you get the water out after?

Thanks for any help

The e90 has an oil level sensor. It doesn't show level over idrive but it does set a low oil light.

Oil level sensors started on the E46. They've been around at least since the M54 engine in 2001. They're quite reliable, and they are designed fail-safe. Ie, if something goes wrong, they'll tell you about it.
