Trouble shooting logic tree
First of all a big thanks to Yosh for helping me scan and giving me lots of information. Really appreciate the help.. Lemme know if you need a favor or two..
![]() Background, 2009 bmw 335 d, picked it up about a month ago and immediately started seeing ses light. Thank you previous owner. Knew it needed some things but didn't expect it so soon.. No better way to learn than to dive into it right!!!! Mileage is about 8.7 kms per litre... Terrible fuel economy, city driving. Ses light kept coming and going and now its on steady, with limp mode coming on in a variety of situations. If i was a guessing man it seems more like when the lp turbo is spooling under high egt situations. red pipe is leaking going to re seal it and going to pull the intake and egr system out tomorrow and clean, check the silicone tubes, and look for visible evidence of leakage, clean the maf sensor. Start with the simple and then start throwing parts at it. I am wondering if anyone else sees anything else that is defective from the codes that might need immediate attention. Also perhaps a reason for limp mode... At this point I think its from high exhaust temps, but am no expert and would love some pointers tips etc.. Not sure if the sensor is defective or if the egts are from something else. Here are the codes Engine / Motor Fehler: Smoothness control cylinder 3 Code: 4596 Fehler: Air flow meter signal / Air mass meter (N) / Air mass sensor Code: 3FF1 Fehler: Smoothness control cylinders 6 Code: 4595 Fehler: Air system, EGR Code: 4868 Fehler: Smoothness control cylinder 4 Code: 4592 Fehler: Exhaust gas temperature / DFC Code: 4C04 Fehler: Exhaust gas recirculation Code: 4B81 Fehler: Exhaust gas temperature / DFC Code: 4C09 Fehler: Exhaust gas temperature sensor upstream of the SCR catalytic converter, the area Code: 4D5C Fehler: 3 cylinder misfire detection Code: 4CE3 Fehler: Glow plug cylinder 6, control Code: 4A1E Fehler: Glow plug cylinder 1, control Code: 4A6E Thoughts pointers suggestions etc.. Help is much appreciated. Will be able to return the favor once I get a little more familiar with the car and its intricacies. |

Sounds like you'll need to change all 6 glow plugs and the module.

How many miles are on the car? When I had those codes, the dealer diagnosed it as needing carbon cleaning and injectors.
If you need a MAF, let me know. |

Not sure if you have already, I would clear all of the codes once; address the code(s) that return.
Fix that red pipe, can cause various codes for that leak. |

There are potentially several things at play here. You are doing the right thing to clean the throttle plate and the EGR. Everything is so interrelated that a malfunctioning EGR can cause a whole lot of problems, but definitely related to the EGR and EGT codes.
Also, clean the electrical contacts for EGR, Glow plug controller and MAF. Your MAF issues can be related to the leaking boost pipe and not the MAF itself, or even carbon related as well. I would not be so fast replacing that one. Glow plug errors are usually the glow plug controller, but dealers replace the glow plugs as well. Some people replace the plugs once they pull the intake manifold. Controllers are not crazy expensive to replace: https://www.getbmwparts.com/parts/20...agramCallOut=3 And at the end of the day, all of these could be carbon related. If you are still waiting for your adapter, you are welcome to borrow mine and then you can drive and monitor your EGR, MAF, EGTs and see what parameters are doing and what codes come up. One final item, start checking (and possibly replacing with silicone) all the vacuum hoses, eventually there are a few problems caused by them. Here are the connections: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...25&hg=11&fg=45 Let me know if you need any help. |

Bump!
Performed the intake, egr, throttle plate, etc cleaning. Lots and lots of gunk, not a difficult job just time consuming, and gross. Its only been 2 days but seems to have cured the limp mode issue. Still need to scan the car, cable arrives this wed, crossing fingers and holding breath. Found a few other issues when I investigating; leaky turbo, air filter that has been neglected, red boost hose leaking. Next step pull the glow plug module and ohm meter it out and check connections, and maintenance... Really suprised how quickly the dealerships throw injectors at these cars, not a cheap endeavor or an easy one. Besides piezo injectors are quite reliable. Thanks for the advise guys will update with more concrete results. |
