330d niggles
Hi guys
Need to pick your brains. Got a 2006 e92 330d, knew the car needed a service when I got it so the enough cold idle and lethargic acceleration I could understand. So I serviced it, oil and filter change, oil breather, air filter, fuel filter, pollen filter, which was in my level of capabilities, and then a local garage removed the Swirl flaps, and the diagnostics showed a few errors, so some Valves and the vacuum control valve was replaced. Had terraclean done and it needed a Dpf regeneration. Drove okish and then a week later an error code saying increased emissions showed up, so took it back and there was a split hose which was replaced, and now there are no errors showing. BUT... It still doesn't feel very smooth, especially at idle, the only way I can describe it is even after the engine is warm, it idles like it's cold, and there seems to be an ever so subtle oscillating vibration while it's idling, it doesn't sound very quiet and when accelerating I have to really give it some gas to get it going. I'm suspecting it's one of 3 things, a dodgy thermostat, a split hose, or my exhaust is blowing. I've tried to go into the secret menu to see the temperature, but I get to the bit where it shows me the van number but can't get the temp to show, what am I doing wrong? And any ideas what it causing what should be a healthy engine behave like this? |

glow plugs and glowplug controller units are pretty common on these. mine used to idle quite rough on cold and viabrate but when warm it used to be smooth, changed all 6 plugs and control unit and on cold starts its back to being smooth.

I don't think the thermostats would cause the issue you are describing. However to check the temp on the secret menu, you need to "unlock" the secret menu. You do this by adding up the last few numbers of the VIN which it displays, and entering the resulting number on the CODE screen. There are loads of tutorials online, have a search. There are some good videos on YouTube.

Ok, I managed to get the temp on. It St rated on 23C then I drove it about 10 miles for about 30 mins mixture of local road and motorway and it got to 61C. I've got a long 40 mile drive later on in the week, but does that temp seem low or normal to you guys?

Low to me, mine gets to 60 quick but then slows. I do 14 miles to work and mine will hit 89c
Also when it's hot or warm, turn just the ignition on then depress the throttle pedal fully down for about 40 seconds then release it. Start it up and see if it feels any better? That procedure should reset the adaption data in the gearbox, which should make it better. I do that to mine when its behaving funny! |
