The oil seems like it's from your crankcase vent... What I would be concerned about is a boost leak at that location.. The actuator is the 'can' above that swirl flap .. I've never looked at this swirl flap system before but it's kind of like the injector rack set up on an old 2 stroke Detroit diesel

I think it is possible that the swirl flap leaks. Your intake manifold looks fairly clean so I assume you had CBU cleaning performed not too long ago. If they send in the manifold for ultrasonic cleaning it is possible that the rubber seals of the swirl flaps got damaged.
Mine just came back from ultrasonic cleaning and it seems there is just a little play in the shaft now. |

I don't think the picture is from the OP's actual swirl flaps as the picture is appears to be from this post:
http://5series.net/forums/diy-do-you...57/#post561411 It seems like he may have just been posting it for identification purposes. |

I'm pretty sure that the US version of the M57 uses an electric actuator for the swirl flaps. See p.34 in the "AdvancedDiesel with Blue Performance" pdf.

Wouldn't you want the swirl flap (SF) system removed prior to ultrasonic cleaning? My thought is to have the intake as close to an empty carcass as possible. Clean swirl flaps separately. I don't think you want to immerse the SF actuator either. Perhaps i'm just paranoid. |

"Send the intake manifold and swirl flaps to an engine machine shop or equivalent automotive parts repair/reconditioning (i.e., radiator repair shop) facility for ultrasonic cleaning or a suitable,...". So I did. Yet, I forgot to remove the rubber grommet that holds the manifold pressure sensor - when it came back the grommet was damaged. Not sure if it happened while handling or if the ultrasonic process actually damaged the grommet. |
