Diesel Differences
While on extended vacation i came across a gas station in Florida it had regular diesel for sale and OFF ROAD DIESEL for sale. Whats the difference?

From my understanding, all diesel you can get at the pump is the same stuff, just one is dyed red to indicate no road taxes were paid on it. The "off-road" stuff for agriculture has been required to be ULSD since the end of 2010.
I was just thinking about this the other day. Our cars would be the perfect candidates for getting away with using off road diesel since they fly way under the diesel radar. I would be surprised if any 335d has ever had its tank dipped. |

there are stiff fines for removing the DPF, stiff fines for removing the catalytic converter, stiff fines for modifying the computer, etc. That hasnt stopped PR or a bunch of other guys from doing those things. I seriously doubt anyone driving a 335d would ever get checked unless an officer had singled them out knowing they were doing it.

Flmoto check the reg's in Florida , the gallon of OFF ROAD diesel at that particular station was $2.67 vice the regular diesel $3.09. Now, this was the ONLY gas station I came across that had that sign!!

Don't know if there are actual differences in the fuel but as everyone else said - it's all about road tax.
I used to have an in-ground 500 gallon tank, when I ordered fuel oil for my furnace, I would have them shoot a couple hundred gallons into the spare tank and tell them it was for my tractor - wink wink. No problems. I was burning this in a old VW Jetta diesel. However, If I tried to buy even two five gallon jugs of off road at the gas station, I had to sign a book and state what it was being used for. I put 300k on the Jetta and was never stopped to have my tank dipped. |

They will conduct fishing expeditions on obvious farm trucks, especially in rural areas. This happens all the time. I doubt cars would even be on their radar. It doesnt have anything to do with smoke, just if they think you have access to off road diesel

If they dip any diesel vehicles it would be those that are diesel without the Farm Plates.
