An amicable parting with my D

This is a bit delayed, but I traded in my 335D about 6 weeks ago, right after the warranty ran out. I was a bit apprehensive about owning the car out of warranty.

That said, the car never gave me any problems. It was by far the most reliable car I've ever owned, and after 4 years and 43k miles, the only problem it had was a squealing AC belt (fixed at the same time as my EGR recall work was done). Just a fantastic car.

There are a lot of horror stories and I've seen a few posts from people saying they got rid of their D because they couldn't deal with the issues any more, but for me it was a great car with no issues, but it was just time to move on, and try something different after owning 2 BMW's. My first was a 135i, which was a fuel system nightmare, but the 335d redeemed it.

Who knows, it may still have CBU issues in the future, but I hope it's gone to a good home.

I promised myself that I would only replace it with something even better, and not being a fan of the current BMW's, I think I found one car that meets that requirement.

I really dont think the i8 and model S are comparable. Two very different cars which just happen to both have an electric motor. Starting price of an i8 is also $50k more than the model S.

Agree, two completely different animals. i8 is not a full battery electric vehicle (BEV), it has a 3 cylinder gas engine. The Tesla can seat 7 or hold lots of cargo, the i8 can do neither. You need to be very flexible to be able to navigate out of the seat of the i8 to clear the door sill. Most who can afford the i8 will have lost that flexibility at least a decade ago.

It was funny when they had one at a BMW club meeting and everyone needed to be pulled out of the drivers seat.

Without question the i8 beautiful, but just as impracticable. As it turns out the Tesla S is the only car out there right now that looks interesting to me. Most everything else is just a newer version of what I already have.

I would love to hear what you think of the differences. When I bought my 335d the only other car I REALLY wanted was the Tesla Model S, but it was out of my price range.

Nice pick for the Tesla. I would go for that too if it was within my budget, but I hope the Tesla model III will be considerably cheaper without many drawbacks from model S.

+1 I hope for that to be my next car. If not, maybe the Model X.

I have 2 kids..... I need a sedan, and the Tesla has 3rd row seats and craploads of storage room. It doesn't waste any space with an additional superfluous gasoline drivetrain like the i8.

I had no idea the Model S had seating for 7. Looks tight, but they are there. Congrats on one of the few sedans that has more grunt than the 335d.

That reminds me of the joke about the difference between a surgeon, an internist, and a pathologist....

At least the 335d will have "grunt" after 300 miles!

Ahhh yes, range anxiety, probably the only negative to the Tesla (well price might be a 2nd). For trips you do need good logistical planning to make it work and possibly have a long trip take a bit longer than in an ICE (Internal Combustion Engine) vehicle. But think anyone on these boards with this level of automotive interest should easily be able to do that planning.

Very cold weather (power is consumed to heat the battery and the occupants) plus a anything that increases rolling resistance (such as snow on the road) is the perfect storm to electric vehicles which can cut your usable range by as much as half. But unless you are math challenged, there is no reason to get into trouble.
