I've found dealerships always find some excuse about KBB or any other value guide. It seems they have some "secret" value book that they use. This has been across the board in different states.

In a way, "trade-in value" SHOULD be, in the public's mind, "wholesale price" but in reality, what dealers need to do to stay in business is pay as low a price as possible. I would more accurately call the price the dealer wants to pay the "auction price" where a car's value is determined by what it gets at a used car auction. If the car is valuable and desired, the auction price is paid. If not, such as a car that has problems or an unpopular model, the dealer sells at auction or sells it to an auction company making it even have a lower price. Changing cars every 3 or 4 years is a popular way of owning by many. Very popular with dealers too. PL |
