Evening,

Ok, the beast is about 800miles off a service (obviously these are now condition based), which just so happens to be the rear pads I know this as Ive seen them and had the warning for a day then it went off.

Anyway, I rang two local BMW specialists and they said they would sort the brakes out and change the oil and filters, vehicle check and they both quoted around the £530 mark. Which to me seemed a little steep considering the service it had last year cost £550 from BMW and it was what they call a minor service.

Now I could take the car to a local garage who would put genuine BMW parts on the car if requested and charge half of that, is there a reason I shouldn't do this? Does it need a specialist? Does it need BMW to service the car?

I only ask as Ive had the car 3 years in Apri, Ive had it serviced as I said last year with BMW and the year before it basically had two services (1 when bought and the other when it went into BMW long story). Im not a tight arse but Im careful with my money, so I dont want to be shelling out when I dont need to just because someone said it needs BMW or Indy stamps for resale...

So can anybody help me out?

£530 is too much money for that.

It seems to be a common theme that too many people are scared going to a BMW is fear of getting a huge bill. They go to an Indy and end up paying even more.

You say you've had the car for 3 years, but it that your ownership or the actual age of the car? Over 4 years old there is good discounts.

A major service at BMW for my 335i is £254 and the minor £190.

Brake pads should cost any more that £40 from Euro Car Parts and should only need 30-45mins to replace. BMW won't do it that cheap though. You might need to get the pads done elsewhere.

I still don't think BMW would be dearer than £530.

Thanks for that, i'll check it out but the cars 6 years old in April.

Last service at BMW they said the rear brakes would be £500 alone so that instantly made me mutter "piss off". The brakes I could do with a friend who builds track cars (mainly e36's) so thats not so much of an issue but with the last service being minor and costing £550 to which half of that was labour for a minor I dearn't think what a major service will cost. I was told by BMW they service the cars Minor/Major/Minor/Major, is this correct?

Take out the brake pads from that and it will be £250 ish.

Do the pads yourself it is a simple job that wont take half hour and save yourself a fortune.

What year and model is your car?

I had oil and filter change and pollen filter and air con service plus a full veichcle check done for £190 last year, i have a 2008 320d m sport edition and it was on 7xk miles

I have to say I found the dealer a little expensive as well. I went to Lancaster BMW Milton Keynes for a quote as it’s the closest to my work and for an Oil, Oil filter, Micro filter, Brake fuild change and MOT they wanted to charge me £450 + vat.
I then rang up A1BN Independent BMW Specialists in Stevenage and for the same thing plus coding my new battery to the car they charged me £310 all in!
Before I took my car to them I rang BMW warranty to check with them and they said I can take the car to any garage as long as its VAT registered and the warranty wouldn’t be affected.
I did ask the dealer if they could price match but they said no.

Regarding pads and discs.. I did that myself easy job.

brake pads are £40 for back at euro! front are the same if they need doing too. plus your wear sensors id say your looking at £100 in parts. Inc labour £150 Max for all pads to be changed. if you getting just the back done halve it!

And the rest of price is for normal service! Fook me they are joking arent they! normal filter service could never see you in region of £400!!!!

Honestly think you can get all this done for around the £350 or even less.

Put this into perspective for my 335d I bought good quality Petronas synitum 5000 av (best Petronas do), oil filter, air filter, cabin filter, windscreen wipers for bosch and mann hummel - genuine bmw bits are mann hummel branded. All that cost a smidge over £140, and brake fluid and it's nearly £160.

The pads price is a joke really. They sell the rear pads for 335i for £45 on ebay bmw store, which I think is a mis-price. They are the cheapest pads they sell lol.

Still though pads can be done anywhere for a lot less.

I recently serviced my 335d myself, £54 for oil, air, cabin and fuel filters (all Mahle who make BMW OEM filters so no concerns about quality), £66 for 8l of Castrol edge 5w30 LL04, and £20 for 5l of brake fluid (still had a a few litres left over to do the mrs car), so £140 all in, plus my time of course but I'm free to me

When my rear pads need doing I'll be doing them myself.

Fuck BMW pricing, great cars but their service prices suck donkey balls !!

Just as a reference point for you I had my rear discs and pads done on my old 335 at my local BMW dealer all in for £330

Some dealers can price match or discount the prices if you ask.

I had a major service for £399 on my 320d with 58k. That was oil, oil filter, air filter, fuel filter, pollen filter or whatever bmw call it and brake fluid change. Still expensive but to keep bmw service history I didn't think it was too bad.

OP if you decide to DIY, don't forget to buy and fit a new wear sensor too...
