White smoke and coolant light on
Hey my E90 320d has started to produce white smoke for about 20-30 seconds on a cold start up and has quite a rough idle when cold, when cold it has no power in the low rev ranges, it rev's very slowly to about 3000rpm then just takes off. My coolant light also came on when driving to work this morning, what could this be?
Sorry i am quite new to the BMW world as i only got the car last week. Thanks, Jonny |

Did you by it from a trader or private? If the former, take it back to them!
Else, check your coolant level (cold) and top it up as necessary, then see if drops anytime soon. Look in your oil filling cap, is it just oil or is there any emulsion in there? (cream coloured slime). |

Agree with DB, sounds like headgasket.

Does sound like HG failure. I wouldn't even be driving the car if this is suspected as the Vectra I had p/x'd against the Beemer let go terminally. Get it checked ASAP mate or it really will work out expensive!

I checked the oil filling cap and there is no slime on it, it is completely black with oil, is there any other checks i can carry out to see where my car is loosing the coolant?

Hi
The same is happening with me. I have a 2006 335d. White smoke from exhaust and a major coolant loss. Rough start and feels sluggish below 2k revs Also whilst the car is off I can visibly see the coolant drop after about 10 mins but there isn't any leaks. Got a friend with INPA diagnostic tool and it came back with all 6 glow plug error Fuel filter Particle filter Smooth running control (4b10) Any input as to what it could be and if you got yours fixed? Thanks |

rough idle from cold could be the glow plug module. but if you are losing coolant as well then it could be HG or some other coolant leak.
Mine currently has glow plug module failure so first 10 seconds after start up i get smoke and heavy diesel exhaust fumes but once it settles it drives fine and has power all through the range. i would do as someone has said and top up the coolant and monitor its level. I could be wrong but HG failure would mean its burning water all the time so smoke would be present at any temperature not just at cold start? |

if there no visible coolant leak it maybe be a crack in the egr tank allowing water into the intake, this would also account for the rough cold start
