E46 M3 vs. AA 335i
Had a meet today and some pulls just to see what damage an AA equipped 335 can do to a stock M3 (K&N drop-in). The 335 had full gas and the M3 was below 1/4. Both cars had one passenger. They were done from second gear rolls. The 335 has 4K miles on it and the M3 has 24K miles. The M3 driver is a skilled SMG driver. He does hit the rev limiter on one of the runs (where he says f- at the end). It takes some time for the AA 335 to get up and go but he walks nicely. He has AA exhaust and XEDE. I am in the M3 using my phone to film.
Without further ado, here's the first run where the M3 driver hits the rev limiter in third gear, shifts and keeps going. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v1...M3vsAA3352.flv Here's the second run. http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v1...=M3vsAA335.flv |

The 335 isn't my car, but is actually PrinceOfCats with the XEDE and the AA exhaust. My car will be getting the JBS2 on Monday or Tuesday and I already have custom exhaust so I am hoping for a similar result! That M3 is an RPM monster -- my car with exhaust still loses to it after 120 mph. The AA 335 fell behind at first and reeled him in dirty style, even with the M3's slight screw up.
Sorry for the quality, once I have my JBS2 I will post up higher quality vids of some different pulls for you all. |

yeah they were some great runs, although the traction wasn't turn off completely may have caused the m3 to get a jump in the beginning.

Not sure what's going on, but the 335 should have killed that M3 bad. I've raced stock M3's with my PROcede 1.47 and there is no contest. It was like taking candy from a bady.
Now, with PROcede V2 and exhaust I'm pretty sure I will rape an M3.

If you look at the first graph below, you can see how close the cars are stock vs stock, the lines are almost on top of each other. I didn't properly label cars in the Gtech, but you can always tell the SMG graph by its jagged shift line, the 335i is fairly smooth. In just about any of these cases (except LACR), the M3 will hang with the 335i till about 40mph. This is probably a function of tire grip. The 2nd graph shows ideal runs in cold weather, at sea level. I also threw in a run from the same day at LACR in the M3. You can see how the elevation and temperature absolutely kills the performance of the M3 to the order of 7+mph. That is about 70 horsepower!. This is why I keep emphasizing THE EFFECT OF DA ON PERFORMANCE! However, being NA, the M3 suffers more at higher elevations. The last graph shows the best runs of the M3 vs JB2 vs JB2R. You can see how the 10-30hp increases correlate to MPH increases, and how those mph increases equate to tenths in ET advantages. It is very predictable. Again, Gtechs may not give your "official times", but they are invaluable in evaluating your performance mods, and car vs car runs. Last edited by hotrod182; 11-24-2007 at 10:05 AM.. |

Hotrod,
Nice visuals and write ups there. I think what happened is that the 335 had traction control intervention issues when he first started the launch from 2nd gear roll. The M3 owner is my friend and he only has a K&N drop-in and he added a resonator to the other pipe on his exhaust. You can tell that once the 335 started to walk (had to catch up and we know how hard it is to catch up once you're behind), he started to walk pretty hard and it just got harder and harder. I think if the 335 had a good start, it would have been twice as worse but he fell behind and still reeled the M3 in. Here's my take: I think that M3 is a factory freak -- if at all possible. I have custom exhaust with 2.5'' piping behind the O2 sensor, secondary cat delete, resonator delete, Magnaflow X pipe, Magnaflow mufflers, and 3.5'' Magnaflow tip. I can walk the M3 up to 60-70 mph and then he starts to catch me and passes me by 110-120 and keeps walking and until we back off at 130 where he is a few CL up. I am stock besides exhaust. I have JBS2 coming in and hopefully that will give me good gains on top of my exhaust because I have exhaust. I will film some runs once I get the JBS2 installed and adapted. The one thing he has going for him is that he is really good at driving the SMG and shifts it perfectly in S6 and sport button on. I just did some runs with my friend and his E90 335 and by 120 I am about a CL ahead. Good for maybe 10 whp for my exhaust? We'll see what JB will give me. |

You will love the JB2. High 12's at 109mph. It is impressive. Let us know when you have it installed! As always, the colder weather makes these things beasts. The difference is even during colder weather, the STOCK 335i traps don't go up that much, because the boost is regulated to a maximum point anyways. The M3 picks up or loses the most under these stated conditions.

Alot of m3 drivers, unless their using the car to its full potential will get walked by stock 335's

stock for stock at sea level an m3 will beat a 335i. Lighter, more horsepower, and a longer RPM band. In the first video the 335i brakes once he finally really starts to pull. You cant expect these 335is to pull cars and cars right away but rather gracefully. I'm not sure what speed you guys hit in the first video but the 335i kept on pulling and I'm sure it would have been 5+ cars. Last night, I raced a stock E46 M3 with a passenger in my car... I pulled 3 cars by 130 in my JB2 335i> he had no passenger.

Stock for stock, the M3, properly driven with SMG, is faster than the 335i stock. I still cannot stay ahead of a stock one (K&N drop in) with my exhaust. We raced to like 120 in those videos -- when the 335 started pulling (had to catch up from bad starts), he started pulling car lengths per second. |
