Radar detectors and the law

Does anybody know the current law on radar detectors? Not the one's working by GPS location but the ones that passively detect radar and laser emissions?

Would police seize a detector? Is it illegal leading to points on a license?

The legal jargon is quite unintelligible as usual.

I see this story today, about camera being turned back on around the UK thanks to the return of funding since 2011. It's fine knowing where locations are in your local area but it's nice to have warnings of accident black spots in unfamiliar locations.

+1 only Jammers are illegal AFAIK

some of the better detectors are
Snooper 3 Zero
Road Angel Gem
Pogo Alert+

Having 'laser detection' is a quite useless feature as it only takes a third of a second to get a reading whilst radar takes about 3 seconds I believe, giving you enough time to slow down.

I use Waze, it is excellent in giving live updates on police positions, it will tell if you an area is infested.

I have a beltronics from about 10 yrs ago. It's still pretty great. I can pick up the gatsos from a good range. The gantry cameras on the M1 etc appear to be extremely well shielded, often only going off when you are driving on the painted lines on the road or being set off by the ones on the other side.

The laser is interesting. I can often get a detection thanks to the dispersed beam off cars etc in front.

Haven't used the detector in some time though due to not knowing the most recent law.

I always find it funny as well to hear that a driver who flashed motorists to warn of a speed trap was arrested when the police line is that speed cameras are only used in accidents black spots to slow motorists down and not to make money.

You sure about laser detection? The scatter from laser is so narrow, they don't detect it until aim directly at the device by which time it is too late

Did you guys know that scientists found that covering a regular plane in plasma/ionized gas would make it invisible to radar.

They're a waste of money. By the time your detector warns you of a laser signature, you're caught. These laser signatures that the detectors pick up are nearly all scattered from hitting other vehicles, trees, buildings or whatever. I had loads of different ones over the years and they'll just basically have you completely distracted looking at the bloody things going off for no reason, instead of having your eyes on the road ahead. Never again

+1 They're not illegal OP, but mainly a waste of time going off all the time. (laser jammers are illegal of course)

The GPS based ones are more useful and they do beep for the registered van positions, and only for cameras on your side of the road. Just helps as a reminder "beep beep beep" in case you're not paying full attention (gasp). No substitute for just keeping an eye out though. If you're not sure a camera is live, just slow down anyway.

Or just save your speeding for better times of day Camera vans are manned by regular employees, they don't do much over time, ever seen one between 6pm and 6am? No, me neither. Maybe the odd Sat or Sun morning though.

6-7am is best, quiet, no camera vans and most coppers shift change at around 6.30, so not many about out. ......Roll on spring time.......

Yes I always keep my eyes peeled and only expect to see them (mobile) in the times you mention. Plus always look to see if the hatch is open.

They have to be manned by the police again now I believe or they can be thrown out of court.

I have copilot on my iphone acting as a gps speed camera detector.
