White smoke from passenger exhaust after VRSF FMIC and BMS OCC!
Hey all,
I used to have a white smoke coming out of my passenger side exhaust. But it was light and come on some time specially after the car is warmed up and mostly when the car come to a stop. The whole issue started when I went completely catless. "catless dp, 2nd cat delete and resonator delete" But after I INSTALLED THE VRSF FMIC and BMS OCC today. I noticed that a puff of smoke comes out on initial acceleration/ when I Rev the engine. and a heavy white smoke of the passenger side that now its Constantly coming out of the exhaust. But not when on acceleration. I also broke the clip on the blow by vent. the one that you transfer to the OCC hose. But then I installed it back on. And was sealed and doesn't move. Not sure what's going on or what's causing the issue. Car drives great and their is no power loss at all. My car is FBO minus the Charge Pipe. And I have stock turbos that were replace on 70k and now car has 109k miles. I should note that I noticed a small cracked on the valve cover. But I don't think it will cause smoke out of the exhaust. |

White smoke = coolant. I don't see how that would be caused by install of an FMIC or OCC though. Possibly there was a coolant leak that the cats were hiding, and has since become worse after the cats came off?

I don't see either of those parts causing the issue.
Once the cats are removed it opens up the doors to problems typically hidden by the cats. The biggest complaint is usually oil blow by or wastegate rattle. White smoke is not new to the N54 either. Plenty of threads on that but it's really on a case by case basis. With a vehicle of that mileage, it sounds like some maintenance is in order. You should definitely look into fixing the cracked valve cover though as that is going to be very problematic once it really starts leaking. I'd start with that and work on any other small issues that you know of first. With the cold temps, a little white smoke is normal as it's a by product of the moisture in the exhaust. If it's pouring out like crazy after the car has been on after 30 minutes then you may need to dig deeper. |

Is it blowing white smoke even after the engine oil is up to temp?
Not sure you're going to get an 100% accurate diagnosis while you still have a cracked valve cover. Fix that first.. |

If your car is blowing white smoke even after the oil is fully warmed up and the ambient temperature outside is not cold then usually something is going on..... These cars are pretty sensitive. I had a hair line crack in my radiator where the core joined the end tank and i instantly lost 2-4 MPG and the car took forever to warm up, and therefore it was blowing more white smoke for longer. I wouldn't be the slightest bit surprised if your valve cover crack is causing the white smoke. everything needs to be sealed properly for the engine to warm up properly and keep condensation out of the oil... |

Thank you all for the replies. yes i do agree that its odd that those two parts were to make the issue worst i might be just mistaking on that part. But yes the smoking Comes on and off, mostly at stop lights, in traffic and when the car comes to a stop. so i would be driving normally no smoke at all, and as soon as i stop in a traffic light i will start seeing the smoke covering the car. you also can really smell the oil burning.
I'm thinking about using JB-weld to seal the crack on the valve cover instead of paying so much on labor to fix it. does anyone here have ever used JB-WELD for anything ? also, im planning or doing the RB PCV VALVE, and fixing the vent hose clip that goes on the intel line of the OCC. what else can you guys think of that might cause this smoking. i know a turbo seal might be the issue but I'm hoping that it won't be the case here. |
