What about running a small section of pipe from where the fog lights go straight to the filter? Or do you have an oil cooler?

I think your best bet would be to fab up some type of box to hold that filter, and then have piping made to go to the kidney grille like you have but also one coming up from the fog light. That would be a considerable amount of cold air while at the same type blocking out hot engine heat. More true to a "real" cold air intake.

you would keep the outside light and just get rid of the middle, which is only used for high beam and illuminating when cranking the wheel. I would say its absolutely worth it and no one would really pull you over for that being illegal. But just a suggestion.

Another option is to have a custom grill on your hood. The placement will be more towards the front and may look odd.

The headlight idea is awesome, but not for rainy days.

1Ms did not come with fog lights since they have an extra coolant radiator on one side and a small oil cooler on the other (which I replaced with a much larger, 12" X 13" Setrab unit).

Ah I keep forgetting you have a 1M. I have a 335is and it came with this same setup. Just an option but you could split the duct and have half going to the filter, half going to the oil cooler. If you have the bigger cooler I think you could get away with a little less air flow...
