Battery Registration

Hi Everyone,

I have a dead cell in my battery which has been causing the battery discharge warning after the car has been sitting for a day or two. I have to keep resetting my clock which is a total pain. I'm planning to replace the battery myself, but need to find a shop to have it registered. The place I usually go said they would change me $98 (1 hours labor) to register it. Seems really steep to me since it should take all of 2 minutes. Does anyone know of a shop in the area that would charge a reasonable price for this? I'm in the Norwood area.

Hey dude,

That's definitely on the steeper side. You can try Import Autowerks in Braintree. They should do it for $50ish.

100 bucks?! You can do this in 2 seconds with a cable and bmwlogger.

Hell get a cable for 50 bucks and do it yourself. Then you can code other options in your car.

Or find a local coder on the forums that would do it for 20 bucks or something.

Dying battery here too (2010 E90). What battery did you end up going with & where did you get it? Was thinking of doing myself too. I have the BT cable (locked to a single VIN, sorry), though I've never tried to register a battery w/ it.

To be honest an hour labor is not too outrageous. If you've ever tried to replace the battery on an e9x you'll know it doesn't take 2 seconds like other cars, along with the fact that you have to take some time programming in the new battery

This worked for me. If you have a second pair of hands the actual install is a pita but you just get tough and it takes a couple of minutes.

My point, sir, is that if OP does not have the means to program it himself at $0 cost... then the one hour of labor quoted is a fair deal.

It just seems to me his original statement was that he felt that $98 was really steep for something so trivial, and I agree.

I think it's pretty much understood if you go to some place you are paying their guy, using their tools, burning their electricity, in their shop and you end up paying a lot more than for the two minutes it takes to wipe the battery memory log.

I happen to think if you want to spend 10 minutes busting your knuckles to get the old battery out and a new battery in then it's ridiculous to then go out and spend nearly $100 on something that can be easily accomplished in a couple of minutes with a relatively cheap data cable and free software. In the end you accomplish doing it yourself cheaper, you gained a new tool and the knowledge picked up along the way.

There is an app that is out for free, which lets you register the battery with a click or 2.

Forget the name of the app. It was for windows computer. Google search it.

Buy a cable for 20-50$.

If I had my stuff here, I'd do it for you.

Why do you have to code or register anything for a new battery? Am I missing something?

Thanks for all the responses. I am ashamed to admit that I let the shop take care of this one. I was taking it in anyway to have my new suspension setup installed, so I had it replaced while I was there. They charged me $190 for the battery + $98 for install and registration ($288 total). Not exactly sure what battery they put in, but the part number on my invoice is MTP94R/H7. I don't have a garage right now so I figured it was worth the extra money to not have to change it myself outside in 5 feet of snow.

One reason I know of is that the computer that monitors the battery over time needs to be reset, otherwise it will be telling the alternator to charge the new battery at the same rate as the old (dying) battery.

Correct. The ECU also needs to know the specific battery information. It is completely overkill.

Oh nice. I just had them do all the fluids in my car. Good shop and nice guys.

I'm curious, how much life did you get out of your original battery? Mine's a 2010 with 60k miles, so I'm thinking of doing it proactively to avoid the problems.

I'm having my 2010 done Friday.

Bought it in Dec of 2009, just started giving me grief (increased battery discharge warning) if undriven for 3-4 days about a month or so ago. 105k miles. Also started to notice this summer when I would be washing it or changes tires with the radio on, would only last a couple minutes without giving me the same battery warning when I started it.
