328d service loaner experience
I know this has been covered but for what it's worth.
- I thought people were laying it on a bit thick but yes, the engine is more agricultural sounding and super anemic compared to the 335d. Reminds me of a pickup I had in Iraq. Not bad, just not the awesome 6-cylinder turbine we all expect from a BMW. - Steering definitely lighter than the 335d, less feel. - Better visibility looking over my shoulder to pass. - Insane mileage -- got over 60 mpg for a ten-mile stretch of highway, dropped to high 40s in town. Nuts. - Still better than most cars on the road. Just not as nice as my 335d. |

The F30 is a different car than the e90. The e90 inline six aluminum block twin turbo diesel makes it even more special in the US market.
I look at the e90 335d as a sports car that thinks its a sedan. The F30 is a "poor man's E-class" which is not such a bad thing, but not a sports car. But using all the options possible, perhaps it comes close with the M-Sport option etc. I think the sports seats in the F30 are better than the e90 sports seats. Perhaps the new 2 series is the true successor to the e90's sporting heritage.... PL |

Driving the various loaners has only confirmed the 335d is the best car for me.
I had the same experience with the 328d. Now if I can only drive my car instead of the loaners I'd be even happier. Latest is a 2011 Saab 9-3 while my d gets the bumper replaced and an IAT code ![]() |

Every loaner that BMW has provided for me has resold me on the 335d. I fell in love with the 335d when I test drove it (after having test driven a 328i, and Audi A4 and a handful of japanese sedans). I do not have the sport packages because I was a newcomer to the BMW and did not know the right questions to ask or packages to look for in a used BMW. I am sure that the E90 with the m-sport package must be better, but my base 335d suits me well. I love to drive it everyday.
I have not test driven the 328d, but I really like the look of the F31 (wagon version). I just do not want to lose the torque that the 335d provides. Now if only they would put the 3.0 liter diesel in the F31, then I would be a buyer. Last edited by rulonger; 03-10-2015 at 08:48 PM.. |

This is funny because all the 328d guys say the same but opposite about the 335d. Mostly that the steering is "too heavy". I dont have the heart to tell them that the "heavy" steering of the e90 is regarded as one of the best steering setups of all time, and that light steering is best suited for soccer mom minivans.

I felt the same after having the 328d loaner a couple of times. Again, if I never experienced the 335d, then the 328d would be a nice car. I did not buy the 335d to have a nice car!
I also had the 2014 535d with xdrive as a loaner. It has the same steering as the 335d. The 535d has a 6-cyclinder in it but was it the M57 or the N57 engine? So before, people were wondering what the M57 would feel like with the new 8-speed slushbox, and its great....until 80mph, then it wimps out. It does not keep pulling like the 6-speed in the 335d. Even in sport mode it would not pull very hard. I had to downshift to 6th to get the same feel of pulling at 80mph. Pure butt dyno but I dyno it everyday for about 200 miles. One thing I did not like was how easy it is to downshift accidentally. Just resting your hand on the shifter with a slight forward pressure will cause it to downshift. I am going to be hard pressed to find a replacement for the 335d in about 4 years or 200k miles, which ever comes first. edit: changed 500k to 200k. 500k is 10 year mark. I do not think I want to own this car after 5 years. Upkeep will be too expensive. Last edited by 335D Alpha Pappa; 03-03-2015 at 12:39 PM.. |

I love my 335d and as someone already posted I was also new to the BMW so did not understood the sport package and since then I do not have one, don't mind it as I do lots of highway driving but the sport seats would be lovely if I had them. In past year and a half I had many loaners and as exiting as it was to try new line up of BMW's I was more happier to go back to my 335d and enjoy all the things it had to offer. So far I would not trade my 335d. Nothing out there yet to replace what e90 has to offer even without the sport package

My rental is a CT 200h right now and I miss my 335d so much. No torque on this glorified Prius!

Had an xdrive 328d for a loaner. Figured I'd take it on a closed course and see what it would do. Clearly it wouldn't get this kind of mileage on the highway. Would it?

My buddy had a loaner 328d xi wagon a month or so ago fully loaded. Freakin paddle shifters on a 328d! Lol
That car would be an awesome daily, but being a passenger I noticed it is a decent amount smaller on the interior than the 335d I'm 6' 1" and had barely any room to move with a short person sitting behind me. Otherwise tho I thought it was cool |
