Smile Fault code reading.

We have a Seat 1ltr. car which is used as our shopping trolley, it has only done 16k in 11yrs of ownership. Well built and reliable little car. On average, once a year the EML lights up and I normally take it for a 20/30 mile burst up the m62 to cancel it. This year it is being obstinate and will not cancel. My question is are fault codes universal, would bmw have the same fault codes as other makes. Is there any fellow member who would read it for me? Denton/ Stockport area.
