N52 Rough Idle

Hi Guys,

I just got myself a 2006 325i and it drove great for the first few days. However, we had a big snow storm and it got covered in a drift. I dug it out and when I started it up it had a rough idle. The needle only bounces +-75ish rpms but there is a noticeable vibration that goes away when its driving. I got a CEL and will pick up a code scanner tomorrow but I am wondering if you guys just think its a bad coil or something else? Would a dirty map sensor or ICV cause this? I want to clean them out because the car has 203k km's on it anyways but I was just wondering if you guys have any thoughts. Also are there any other sensors I should clean while im at it?

Can be all of the above and more. Your first step is getting a code out. Since it has a CEL it will have some good information about what's going on.

Okay sounds good! I will let you guys know the code when I have it. But are there any other sensors that I should be cleaning while im working on the car? Or any other preventative maintenance steps I should take? The previous owner took good care of it and got it serviced regularly but from the looks of it, it needs a good cleaning haha. There's a decent layer of dirt coating the whole engine bay.

It's past 100,000 miles, so it needs plugs if they weren't done at 166KM. Bets to scan first and diagnose later.

The plugs were done at 170ish and I looked at them today and they seemed fine. I also cleaned my maf and looked for oil in my eccentric shaft sensor and everything looked good but I have the same idle. I am hoping I have a misfire code tomorrow because that would make this pretty easy and I wont have to deal with the horror stories a lot of people have. Also the vibrations stop at higher revs so I think its a misfire but ill let you guys know tomorrow! Thanks for all of your help!

Hey guys! So i pulled the code and it was a misfire in cylinder #5. I got a new coil and she runs great again! However, im still just wondering what sensors I should clean? I have read a lot of stuff on the vanos solenoids and it seems like they can get gummed up. Is it worth taking them out and cleaning them?

I clean and swap mine every 50,000 miles.

If the car runs fine, just leave it alone

If you feel it's hesitating without causing a code, cleaning and swapping the VANOS is a good first set at diagnosing.

Bets to scan first and diagnose later. __________________ A manual transmission can be set to "comfort", "sport", and "track" modes simply by the technique and speed at which you shift it; it doesn't need "modes", modes are for manumatics that try to behave like a real 3-pedal manual transmission. If you can money-shift it, it's a manual transmission. "Yeah, but NO ONE puts an automatic trans shift knob on a manual transmission."
