Windows 7 vs Windows XP for coding with VMWARE, best setup?

So I have a new 16gb Macbook Pro Retina and I'm running VMWARE 7.1.1 with Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.. Anybody else running this successfully?? I see a lot of people use Windows XP and even more people using 32 bit systems.. One thing that's kind of odd though is that in the "about" section of the Win 7 virtual machine it says "2gb" and not "16gb", wonder if that matters..??

My cable is in the mail and will be here Tuesday or earlier and I just want to make sure I have everything I need and it's as fool proof as possible.. I can run any version of Windows it doesn't matter to me as I'm only gonna be using it for coding my car, I just snatched Win 7 64 bit because it was the first thing I thought of to try, and it works flawlessly for the most part..

I've searched on this topic, but most of the threads are from pre-2013 and I'm just trying to get a more updated idea of what works best..

Thanks!

The 2GB is the default RAM allocation. You con modify that to almost 100% of your installed RAM. If you have 16GB, you could easily bump it up to 12GB. The only other issue you may run into is NCS not working on 64 bit, because you need a diff version of NCS for that, which isn't included in the BMW Standard Tools.

Thanks wildcat!

So you think a 32 bit version of Win 7 would be better? Or even XP..??

If you have the option, 32 would be easier/less hassle.

Yes I have a few backup versions of Win from XP to 8.1 and 32 to 64 bit... So do I need all those other programs too?? I wanna do the Alpina flash and some typical coding features, like what I had PM'd you about a few weeks ago.. Do I just need WinKFP, INPA, and NCSExpert?

Thanks brother!!

You just need Win 7 32 Bit, then install BMW Standard Tools (INPA, NCS Expert, WinKFP and Tool32). Then it's easier if you use the BMW Coding Tool to import your DATEN files. After that, you're all set as long as your cable drivers are installed/set up correctly (latency and comm port set to 1).

Nice! Thanks brother!

I'm definitely such a DIY'er, that's why it's my inner hobbyist is wanting to figure this all out haha..!!

From what I've read, I can backup everything before I start to do anything so I'm sure to not mess anything up, right?? Also, are some coding features easier to do than others, or is it like once you do one you can do them all..??

Thanks!

Alpina isn't possible to back up, you would have to re-flash your tranny back to the stock ZB if you don't like it.

For the most part on coding, if you can change one value you can change them all using the same process. The only exceptions are values for lighting configurations. Those sometimes have several "wert" values that provide power to certain lights during certain configs. Then, some values require NETTODAT coding, such as increased AE brightness or correct fog light flicker/shutoff. Those require some further reading/understanding before attempting.

Oh I understand, that makes sense..

For now I just wanna do the Alpina B3 flash and the windows up and mirrors fold with keyfob.. I'm not to concerned about angel eye brightness and all that, maybe once I get some LUX or other LED's I'll tinker with that stuff..

Can anyone provide me with the most current/stable versions of NCS, INPA, ect..?? My NCS says version 4.0.1 but then in the install instructions it says to replace it with 3.0.1 and idk if that sounds right..
