First Track Day Video

Since my BMW is N/A, I will share this with you in the N/A section. This was my third session of the day. I did have an issue with oil temperature, as at one point during this session, when I was behind the red Fiat 500, my oil temperature hit 300 degrees, though my water temperature was okay staying around 214 degrees. The track temperature was in the high 90's.

One day...

I think the problem is you're an automatic and need additional cooling because of it.

I need to figure out how to mount a 335i oil cooler, I have the cut out for it in the right front wheel well, though it is capped off.

Ahh, another addict early in the early stages of getting hooked on track crack Congrats on getting out there.

What makes you think an oil cooler is needed? Oil for these cars is good up to well over 400 degrees, I happen to use 0w40 Mobil 1 (not turning this into a 'which oil is best thread'). My car has almost 160,000 miles and plenty of very hot track days without issue.

Enjoy safely!

Per Porsche Club rules we could only pass on the back straight and the car in front is supposed to signal you by with a hand signal out the window. During the previous session I was stuck behind her for several laps and she never signaled me to go by. When I did pass her during this session it was an illegal pass because she never signaled. Had the corner workers noticed it, I could have been black flagged. By the way, it was a Maserati.

Hey now, there were a few good female drivers out there, she just wasn't one of them.

The first lap is supposed to be slow to warm up the tires, the car, and the brain. As for the red Fiat 500, my oil temperature was nearing 300 degrees and I could feel the performance falling off so I backed off to cool it down a bit.

I was just razzing you for the slow stuff!
Yep....I notice this even in the streets, once warmed after some spirited driving the power just drops off.
Looks like a blast once the pace picks up.

Sounds like you need an oil cooler! FYI, the DME has a map for cutting torque when the oil temp reaches a certain threshold, just like coolant. it gets pretty severe as the temp climbs. you do not want to be running the car hard with 300+ degree oil..

Nice video Tom, I enjoy the sound of that tuned setup. It was frustrating watching the first couple of laps with the slow Maser.

I retrofitted the OEM oil cooler/ heat exchanger on my N52 last week. Drove it hard last night and it appeared to work excellent.

Thank you! In the previous session I was stuck behind the Maserati for four laps and she never gave me the pass signal.

I've been doing a lot of research on this, and you've confirmed what I concluded, it is very doable. Going the aftermarket cooler route but with an OEM oil filter housing and thermostat will cost about $1,200. How did you source your set up?

Tom, I got an N55 oil filter cover assembly from Tischer, an RB Turbo thermostat delete plate, an Improved Racing 215F thermostat, a Setrab oil cooler and bracket for less, at least I'm pretty sure. The labor with BMRS fittings and lines isn't cheap but not crazy terrible at $560 at the dealership with the race team doing all the work and hose construction. The cooler will get installed where the 335i cooler goes using the 335i duct pkg with the Aero bumper.

BTW, just got the body shop quote for painting the entire Aero package including blending, etc. - hooboy. Dang but paint's expensive.
