RB turbos wastegate loose..

I stuck my hand down to the rod that controls the wastegate on my RB turbos and it is very loose...

I notice on acceleration I have extreme wastegate rattle. How do I tighten this??

Sorry for all the threads today. I'm working on the car trying to fix all my problems!

You might want to get in touch with Rob@RBTurbo directly. I wouldn't want to mess with them without the guy who built them telling me for certain I know what I'm doing, my opinion anyway.

agree. Call or email Rob. If I remember correctly the outside pieces are stock, it's just the internal wastegate pieces that were modified by Rob, but he should have ideas on how to best proceed. Good luck.

I hammered RB about loose wastegates.

I was wrong RB was right.

He will give you a list of things to fix then they wont rattle.

Would you mind sharing the list of things rob recommended you do to eliminate the rattle? Could be beneficial to the community.

I had partial throttle rattle on rbs and replaced boost solenoid n rattle is gone,i wish i could say the same about the occasional smoke out the tail pipes lol

I've been getting smoke out of the tail pipes also. It's like a black/blue and smell horrible lol.

Normal, even for non-rb cars with catless downpipes during the 1st 10-15 minutes. If its longer than that and you are consuming oil at a good rate then it is turbo seals which is also a normal issue even with non-rb's.

Mine, no smoking, but I have hi-flow cats. No oil consumption either.

Remember we said no way to leak except? Well they have small gaps in them and oil can be forced through them and into the turbo housings.

Don't have them, but you have them, they can't leak, but there are gaps and they can leak into the housings.

Are there any examples of someone rebuilding a stock smokey turbo and completely eliminating the smoking problem, without doing anything else (PCV refresh, etc.)?

Swap in good center section: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1012752 That guy did a lot of the pcv refresh related work to be sure it was not the issue 1st.

Most are not willing or able to do the work themselves. Easier to do what that person did if you have the skills. Also, you can find great low mileage stock turbos for $300 (for both) from someone who upgraded, so sometimes that's better than the labor of rebuilding.

So what specific part actually "goes bad" in this instance? Is it a combination of wear causng shaft play, which then allows blow by, etc.?...I ask again, what is the actual "seal" that allows the blow by to make it's way through the exhaust? Is it the piston ring? Something else?

I'd defer to someone like Rob or Tony that have seen hundreds of stock cores, but they wear (come out of balance) over time causing shaft play and other tolerance levels to be tested. That play and/or some issues with proper draining can lead to oil backup that can pass the seal (ring and the seal plate). My guess #12 and 13 in the diagram at the amazon link above (#12 Seal Plate (either flatback or superback)
#13 Snap ring for seal plate).
