Part Number Lookup

I drive a 2007 328i E90. I stopped at a light and I heard the attached part hit the rear floor. I tried getbmwparts.com and entered the part number "7 118 501-04" and nothing is coming up. Can anyone help?

BMW found it...is an under seat rail cover. The part number was in some other system.

I did that too...the part number didn't work on anysite...the parts guy at the dealer found it somehow. I am guessing the part number on the piece was a subset.

Just as an FYI (as you already found out) parts do not necessarily have the entire part number cast in to them.

BMW part numbers have (11) digits

> The number you found
Quote:
7 118 501-04
is a usual partial part number.

The -04 is NOT part of the part number

> '7 118 501' is the partial P/N, but you need the 1st (4) digits which indicates the Group

> So in 9 times out of 10 you will never be able to order a part by checking the number on the part - you will need to use a Part Number Locator

I use www.penskeparts.com

Found your part in 10 sec:

Item #15 52107118501 COVERING SEAT RAIL LEFT

That kinda clears it up...but where would I get the group number from if I don't know where the part is from on the car? Sounds random, I know but the detailer knocked it off so I didn't know where it came from. I put the car info in and got like 11 of those hard to read diagrams.
