335 OEM Sturt bar vs others

How does the sturt bar that comes with the 335 compare to the others being sold out there?

Namely Racing Dynamics, strut bar?

There is currently no strut bar that fits over the 335 intake box. The OEM piece doesn't fit, and Turner Motorsports has just this week learned that the Racing Dynamics bar doesn't fit either.

Pretty annoying, that. Almost makes one think about firing up a garage operation to make a front strut brace, rear shock tower brace, and maybe even some under carriage bits to put those viagra 4 hour rigidity claims to shame. Rumor has it that there are some ceramic materials that would outperform CF at 70% of the weight.

In my "garage operation", I'm hoping to take a heat gun to my airbox to fit around the OEM bar.

*shrugs* um is it just me but I have some kind of strut bar that came with my car... its skinny bar that goes where a strut bar goes and it curves BEHIND the airbox etc.

There are strut tower braces, one for each side, that appear to fasten to the firewall. Perhaps you mean those?

This is the OEM piece I'm referring to:

What if...

I just got a custom cold air intake installed. The stock OEM air filter box was removed. Does this mean that I can install the OEM strut bar on my 335i? Was that the only obsticle that prevented us from using the OEM strut bars?

Yes, apparently the only obstacle is the stock airbox. The guys at msdsinc have successfully fitted an OEM strut bar over their intake.

Uhm, I've been driving around for 4000 miles with the oem strut bar installed.
It fits, but you get a rattle in your dash that sounds like a little bird tap-dancing in your air vent. I machined a set of 2mm spacers and secured a small strip of rubber where the bar goes over the air-box and problem solved.

I'd be willing to pay you to make an extra set of 2mm spacers and the small strip of rubber

Please post the pics too!

That's whats nice about the oem bar, it curves so you can still access the oil cap.

You can do it with simple spacers and a slice of high temp hose from Ace hardware. I'll post it soon.

I assume you're referring to the Racing Dynamics bar. I was actually the one to force them to test fit, under the threat of a full refund if I had to be the guinnea pig. They were very responsive: i.e. they test-fitted, failed to install, and now their page is corrected:
