Local Upgraded turbo possibility for Aussies

Hey guys,

I've been speaking with gcg turbos at condell park in sydney regarding offering something simular to rb and Vargas turbos for us n54 owners. With the shitty aussie dollar I have been looking for an option locally.

Gcg is a very renown turbo specialist and I have used them in the past for work on my gtr.

They believe it wouldn't be an issue high flowing them, but does anyone know any other differences to stock turbos than the aftermarket ones already on offer?

Also does anyone have a pair lying around they would be happy to lend so I can have them inspected by gcg?

Thanks.

I had thought of this in the past (funnily enough GCG also!) but RB have years worth of development in their products that have been specifically designed and adapted over the years for the N54.

Having said that GCG have been in the game a long time also, and are definately the go to guys here in NSW (and arguably Australia) so it would be interesting to see what they could come up with.

Ideally you would get your hands on a set of oem turbos, a set of known aftermarket turbos and see what their approach was in terms of design.

Sounds like a good project and it would make more sense for us Aussie guys to team up with a local turbo builder, but having said that RB's products work well and he seems like a top bloke!

Rb's products do seem great but I would in all honestly love to be involved in something locally. Not just for the sake of supporting a local australian buisness but also having local warranties, repairs and support. I believe gcg could corner the aus/ nz market.

Maybe someone who has had oem turbos sitting next to rb's could chime in? I believe there has been modification to the wastegates on the rb's

Yup I totally understand where you're coming from.

AFAIK advan offer a warranty for the RB's if you buy them and have them fitted by advan.

But yeah I wouldnt imagine you would get someone having a set of RB's just laying around to loan you.

If GCG were serious they could possible buy a set of aftermarket turbos and do some R&D inhouse. If GCG were sucessful they would also possibly have other export RHD markets other than NZ such as the UK, and possibly japan (I always thought someone like HKS would tune the 335i but it doesnt seem the 335i is popular in Japan?)

Simply "high flowing" the standard turbos isn't enough - the waste gate design needs some improvement too before anyone would go spending the money and time on a turbo replacement.

Seeing rb turbos are on an exchange program tells me that rob beck uses them as a base in his upgraded models. Finding out exactly what is done to the wastegate would be the question I guess. Would be awesome to see a set or rb's up close next to some oem's though.

I'm sure if this thread showed quite a bit of interest gcg would look into it further. Don't think they would invest in a set of rb's with limited interest.

I dont believe its as simple as high flowing the turbos and improving the wastegate design.

VTT didn't seem to be able to just walk into the N54 turbo market and produce great numbers and turbo reliability rivaling RB straight away.

Yes that's correct that aftermarket turbo builders use the oem housings and manifolds as a core exchange.

For GCG to do this right, they would need to spend a lot of time and R&D and be committed to the project.

May I suggest that you start researching the forum and n54 tech forum and then start discussing your findings with GCG and see how interested they are, then request a rough price that they could supply them for and start gauging the market by offering a GB. (beware you have to have to be a forum sponsor on here to start a GB, or the GB has to be affiliated with a forum sponsor)

If you get 6-10 guys keen (dont forget the 135i and Z4 guys) they may start vesting some interest in the project, but this project would take some time (I'm guessing 6 + months)

Post up a WTB thread for some used oem turbos, its possible someone may loan you a set or sell you a set for the core exchange price (save them sending them to the USA) and then once you're done you could resell them to an aftermarket turbo builder in the USA (Most USA builders are keen for the RHD housings as they're rare in a LHD market)

If it was this easy, don't you think RB would have hundred's of competitor copy cats out there today?
