Swap 09 328i engine into an 06 325i?

I have a 06 325i w/the N52 engine with about 130k on it. It has the really bad valve tick and my plan was to run it until it died but now its smoking bad so I want to replace the engine. My question is to avoid getting a salvaged engine with the same tick I wanted to get a 09 or newer 328i engine. I heard the only difference between them was basically the intake. So if the basic engine is the same I should be able to take parts from my old engine to put on the new engine as needed.

Can I swap a 09 or newer 328i engine into an 06 325i?

It's the same exact engine going into a E90 chassis that it was designed to go into.

The the OP needs to spend a little time looking through RealOem.

It's my understanding that all of the 328s use the N52N which shows up as a different part number for both the running and short block. The N52N has a different block, crankshaft and connecting rods. The dme is different and I don't know how many of the multitude of sensors or harnesses will swap over. I think the throttle body is different but the intake manifold is the same.

I'm not even talking about the low compression version.

Having said the above, the swap should not be a problem.

If I were in OP's situation, I would go N53 route. Direct injection baby! Still bolts right in. DME and sensors will probably be tricky though

the wiring harness and DME are different on the 328. there are a couple sensors that are different too. you can't just swap in the DME and make it work in your 325. it won't start.

I don't know if the 328 motor can take the sensors from the 325 or not. maybe you could make it work with your harness, sensors and DME.

the 328 has the same intake as your 325. You could get one from a 330i, but you still can't just swap motors - the 330i motor would run in your car, but since you have a 325 it would still effectively run as if it were a 325. you could make it work with a tune, though.

Thanks for all of your replies especially hassmaschine your reply answered most of my question.

Basically I can make the swap work by using all of the necessary accessory parts (sensors, brackets, etc) from my original engine?

Thanks to all again.

I think so, assuming BMW didn't change any of the sensor mount locations.

To OP, you would probably be better off doing some sort of tune up on the 06, get it to stop smoking or whatever it is doing and selling it on. Then pick up a newer model, everything about the newer model will be better if it was decently looked after.

I agree. Your best bet is to sell this one and put the proceeds + engine swap money towards a newer car.

Assuming he owns the 325i outright, thats going to cost a lot more than swapping in a $1500 motor..

Also, he could just swap the head which would be even cheaper The smoking is probably the ccv system, which can be replaced or rebuilt.

But, please, be afraid to do anything to your car, just buy a new one for $15-20k every time something goes wrong...
