OFT is not for changing anything, as it is just for up/downloading files. But as these files are not encrypted you can change anything with TunerPro for instance, as long as you know where to look at in the file. So the answer to your question is yes.

The OFT itself doesn't allow the user to make adjustments? Hmm, that's news.

Exactly, the OFT cannot alter the software directly. You need to copy the file over to your pc and make adjustments there.

TunerPro:
http://www.tunerpro.net/

For tuning purpose you need to know at which addresses in the file you obtained from your car with the OFT which map is to make changes. These addresses are gatherd in a separate file, the XDF file.
Hassmaschine is already working on a XDF which we can use once it is finished.

Please help me understand the OFT.

I thought the OFT included the XDF files required to make your own changes? One would assume it would also correct checksums.

XDFs are not included but it will autocorrect checksums while flashing to your car

the XDF that I've seen for OFT is unfortunately pretty much crap.

I've gotten pretty far on MSV70 but I haven't done much with MSV80 other than probing a little bit to see what's the same (they're pretty similar except big endian vs little endian byte order).

One thing about MSV80 is I have no idea which is the latest program version. it wouldn't be too difficult to make an XDF of just the basics (fuel, ignition, vanos, DISA, VVL) but I don't want to make a new one for every outdated program version..

I would love to have one, but I would have no use for it honestly. From what it sounds like, it doesn't really allow me to tune myself.

It is one of the options to obtain your car's software for tuning it with TunerPro, one of the wide spread tools for "tuning". But you need to know what to do with it.
