Getting dealer to update DME
Hey guys
I've had some fluctuating idles and car stalling while in neutral with the clutch pedal in which i've posted about in the past. I'm still under warranty so the car is at the dealer right now and they are having trouble replicating the issues surprise surprise...Anyway I found the service bulletin that lists my symptoms and says the solution is to update the DME, so I emailed that to my SA. Is there anything else I can do to get them to update the DME? Since they can't replicate the symptoms i'm doubtful that they will do any work on it. The symptoms are real but somewhat inconsistent and don't happen all the time. Even if the DME update doesn't fix it I still want to get that done so that I know Cobb will work with my car once i'm out of warranty (aprox. 3k KM) |

It will be up to your SA - if they can't replicate, more than likely they won't update the DME. You can always pay out of pocket to have it done or just keep taking it back to them saying you keep having the issue.
It is a hard issue for them to replicate - good luck though!

I've never heard of winkfp. Is it pretty straight forward? I think if it comes to that I'd feel more comfortable just paying the dealer to update it. I don't know anything about coding or DMEs and wouldn't want to mess it up.

The hardest part is getting BMW Standard tools, BMW coding tool, and an updated daten. You usually can find the first two bundled and the updated sp daten is also pretty accessible.
this shows you how to set it up http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=859474 This is how you do it. DME Flash DIY using WinKFP DIY Guide to Flash DME: This is for educational purposes only! Attempt at your own risk! Portions of this may have been borrowed from a very popular TCU DIY flash. ************************************************** ********************************** WARNING...If you dont know what your doing, dont be brave and blindly go into this advanced flashing of software into the DME module.. If your not too confident in doing this, either pay someone or just do without it.....WinKFP is a very dangerous tool but yet its awesome and in terms of coding its pretty advanced.. Proceed after reading this warning if you choose to do so... ************************************************** ********************************** Before you attempt this you should have some knowledge in coding and setting software. You need to confirm INPA software is working and communicating with car. If you dont have INPA communicating, dont move beyond this point and go back and do some more research on getting it to work.. There are plenty of DIY guides for setting up INPA, Ediabas, NCSexpert and WinKFP, You can purchase a proven cable that works...Please dont ask will this one work as it is cheaper if so.. Buy one that is proven and it will save you alot of headaches! http://www.one-stop-electronics.com/...&product_id=16 Once you have configured your laptop properly with INPA, NCSexpert and WinKFP, you need to download an up to date SPdaten. Once Winkfp is configured correctly your ready to update most ECU's in your car. IMPORTANT..For those using Procede or JB4 make sure the tune is set to VALET map 0 before you start the flash.. Here we go: -Make sure you have a battery tender -Open drivers door and turn ignition ON (cluster guage on) Basically hit the start button without foot on brake or foot on clutch -connect cable to obd connector of car -Load Winkpf software -Press (F1) comfort mode -Press (F3) Update ZUSB -Choose the DME your car has (i.e. MEVD17) -Click ok -Press (F4) Enter your VIN ( make sure you double check you have entered the correct VIN numbers) -click ok -Press DONE (F8) -Press (F3) Program -Pop up window will say you can code the ECU xx more times, click ok -Flashing begins and you will have to wait till it reaches 100% twice..The first bar will finish rather quickly and then another bar progress of 100% will take about 3-4 minutes the most and it will be completed... -If everything is done correctly, then you will get a pop up screen saying programming done, click ok |

I had the same situation: of the surging and needing to update the DME, against the service bulletin. But my surging was inconsistent, sometimes I could go a week without the condition. So I took a video on my phone, of the last two occurrences. Transferred the videos to my SA and he used them as the justification for the update.

So my car is at the dealership and I've asked the SA to tell me which ROM is on the car. she didn't know quite what I was talking about. She asked if I mean the integrated software level? I said it's an alpha-numeric 5 digit code like 97VOB for example. Is there anything else I can tell them or do I need a new SA?
