Rusted our Exhaust JB4 Related? - Suggested Mechanic in CT??

As you can see I am having some issues with the exhaust of my E92 335i. Has anyone ever had this issue where the exhaust pipe/Tips actually rusted out to the point they fell off? I am running the JB4 but only on Map 1 so I wouldn't have expected this to happen. But I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem?

Any thoughts on whether I can just have new pipes/tips welded onto the muffler or am I better off replacing the whole exhaust muffler and all?

I also just moved up to CT so I need to find a new mechanic in the Hartford area (to fix my exhaust) any suggestions?

Thanks!

Kyle

Just curious as to why you suspect the JB4?

I'm grasping at straws here. My only thought was that the higher rate of combustion was pushing more heat through the exhaust system.

Not sure it is related to the JB4 but to have that much corrosion seems odd,

If that's a 335, then those are aftermarket tips

Looks like the rust begins where the shop cut and welded on the tips, I would blame the shitty metal over a tune

Yeah, unless the JB4 sprouted aftermarket quad tips I'm not sure why they get mentioned

So whats the best move to replace the whole system or just replace the tips and hope it doesn't happen again?

Seeing as the cut is pretty close to the muffler, I'd get a new exhaust system

Only after you email burger and ask them why their tune is rusting out exhausts

Looks like they used cheap mild steel for the pipe extension; notice the rust is only on the section they welded. Your muffler and stainless tips are fine. The welds are right on the muffler so I don't know if a new shop would be able to clean up the rust and still have enough material to weld a new pipe onto without getting into the internals of the muffler. But it wouldn't hurt to take it to a shop and get their opinion.

JB4 had nothing to do with this; even with higher boost, EGT's should be in the same ballpark as OEM if tune is correct. There will be more exhaust flow, but that wouldn't impact anything. Even if there was more heat, it's negligible at the muffler since it's so far from the engine.

So you blame JB4 when a shop put some crappy metal on your exhaust, probably 1020 steel or something instead of stainless. Okay. You should probably tell Terry about this.

Don't listen to these fools.

Of course it was the JB4. The JB4 super heated the exhaust gasses and caused this rust. It is a well documented issue with this platform.

You just so happen to be lucky that I need to pick up a JB4 for one of my whips and I just replaced my exhaust so I will have no issues with this rusting for a while at least.

What would you like to sell it for? As it is used & old is $200 shipped fair?

After some research, you're right. Burger knew of these issues and programmed the JB4 in a way that it would only cause that minor section of exhaust to rust. Damn those guys are smart

Terry offers a refund for such instances, just reach out to them and he'll be glad to assist

if the exhaust gas is super-heated, why it only showing up as an issue at a point
furthest from the engine?!?

you're all gonna get this guy in BIG trouble with Burger...

Because the mufflers are the largest restriction point in the exhaust, hence why people go straight pipe, the largest restriction is where the heat is trapped which is why it fatigued the metal and caused the rust. Again it's a well documented problem on these cars. The discussion regarding this issue was exhausted long ago. He either replaces his exhaust or removes his JB4 and sells it to me or both.

jb4 puts additional stress on the muffler bearings. Causing this pre mature failure.

Speaking of which I actually convinced a co worker that the sound he heard was his muffler bearings and we went to Lous and looked them dead in the eye and said 'It's my muffler bearings I need you to replace them'. Fucking priceless. I did such a good job convincing him they were bad that when the mechanic was like 'look you don't have muffler bearings and I can't fix them' he continued to tell them it he knew it was the muffler bearings and he didn't want a new muffler just the bearings replaced. Basically he was saying 'don't rip me off I know I just need muffler bearings'. What a fucking idiot.

So definitely not selling the JB4 at this time, going with replacing the exhaust instead. All thought I appreciate the certainty of your argument. However may end up selling the whole car in a few months due to a move to NYC. So at that time if I do sell the car, I would be happy to sell you the JB4.
