I can imagine how it might be annoying in an auto, especially as theres no way to signal the engine that your about to move off in the same way pressing the clutch in a petrol does. But then that lack of control over the car is why i dont drive automatics in the first place.
Would be interesting to correlate actual real data on turbo failures on stop-start cars vs the models without it. I suspect there are other far more important factors, like whether the owner gives the car death from stone cold, or gives it a thrashing and then shuts the engine off while the turbos still glowing hot, and even just how the cars driven in general, that makes any additional wear from stop start in traffic on a warmed up engine pretty hard to actually correlate in any meaningful way. Theres also the issue that by the time the turbo fails, the cars often 3rd or 4th hand, so youve literally NO idea how its actually been treated upto that point and how often the stop start has actually been used. You might well think "oh this turbos failed due to the bloody stop start" when infact every previous owner has turned it off and its failed for some other reason. A few years ago before it became mainstream, there was talk of replacing the starter and alternator with a combined motor-generator unit on stop-start equipped cars. It seems that many modern stop-start cars didnt bother with this approach, and instead just retained a normal starter motor and alternator which is kinda interesting. Presumably it was discovered the standard parts were perfectly upto the job and thus a new system wasnt actually needed?
"Would be interesting to correlate actual real data on turbo failures on stop-start cars vs the models without it. I think its a little too early to make that call but I think I can see it coming. I guess in say 2 or so years time you'll be able to re look at all this and make a call. Don't forget that on say 320d's there turbo related failures have been coming out for around as far as I'm concerned a good 2.5 years(based on 54 plate models and above)the earlier E46 models again you can look to see age wise how they fair, E9X models on the turbo side of things seem, to be weaker than their E46 compatriots IMO but both suffer for sure. |
