Exterior bulb failure - error message!
Hi
Just driving yesterday and the "bulb of exterior lighting system" error symbol came up on the display - bottom of page 151 in the handbook. It may have coincided with me applying the brakes. Also, when I pushed the left stalk, and drilled down from the error symbol, the code CC-ID 373 came up. When inspecting the car, my wife claimed that a brake light was not working, however, I have had all the bulbs out at the rear of the car and tried each bulb in turn. They all appear to be working. I have also checked all the other exterior lights and they appear OK. Whilst checking the lights I noticed that they sometimes did not light up in certain positions of the cluster - so maybe it's a loose/bad contact? Everything now looks fine and all the lights are working - but I can't get rid of the error message. The car is 2 1/2 years old and an AUC, so warranty cover should be fine, if it's a warranty-related issue. Any thoughts? Jeff |

Bulbs can often look OK.....but are in fact faulty.
That would be my first port of call anyway Jeff.

When I was testing the bulbs, it appears (to me) that they are all the same type on the rear clusters. To test them, I left the hazard warning lights flashing and put the bulbs, one at a time into them. If the bulbs worked, I assumed that they were Ok. I suspect that I probably swapped the bulbs around anyway? Jeff |

Do a search on "Brake light malfunctions", there's a TSB for the coupes where the bulbs come loose and throw an error code. My dealer fixed mine in 10 minutes by replacing the entire holder on both sides. Maybe the sedans are doing the same thing now?

also could be that your bulb has very short life left, its triggers warning light on obc. Dont know if same on e90, but on my e46 warning light came couple days before bulb gave up

Problem solved!
Went to the local spares shop and bought 4 bulbs at 62p each. Two of the bulbs looked slightly "darkish" when placed against a piece of white paper, so I changed them. Everything now is Ok and the error code/symbol have gone. Thanks for your help. Jeff |

Had this come up on my last month whilst on constant cruise control at about 70 on the motorway, no brake application, same speed, no large bumps or anything
Went into the menu and clicked through and it disappeared. Checked all the bulbs and ensured they are all clipped in and nothings a miss, explain that one? Grant |

Not from memory, but the rear clusters are really easy to take off. You can see the bulbs and maybe take one out to get the type.
As I said, a trip to a back-street car accessories shop and a few 62p bulbs solved mine. I just kept swapping them around until I sussed out that it was probably the brake lights. Thinking about it, they are on/off all the time and are bright, so they probably take the most hammer. It surprised me, but most of the bulbs in the cluster are the same type. |

Looks like an old style flash bulb if you remember them.
Wedge shaped base with two folded metal contacts. Very similar to the little G9 halogens in a domestic light fitting.
