New engine going in...tune again or leave stock?
Some of you may have seen my thread about my cracked piston. Well...ordered a new (used) engine with 50k on it. It should be in the car in about a week.
It has been well over a month since this all started and wow do I miss my car...rolling in a Mazda 5 minivan rental and it is getting old fast. I'm torn right now on whether or not to go down the tuning road again. Car has an AMS fmic, charge pipe, I've got a couple different DCI's, OCC, PCV upgrade, LPFP upgrade and some other stuff like a PE exhaust. Car is riding on KW V3's, M359's with PSS. I love the car and this entire experience has been taxing on me....a real nightmare to be honest. I'm on the fence about flashing it again. Paranoid is an understatement. I've been all about tuning and getting that extra power out of the car. It is an addiction I'm sure you all can clearly relate to. It would take some getting used to. Anyone experience this? All input is welcomed... My car....

Oh....I have a Cobb with PTF maps and an MHD setup. Maybe just run an OTS mipd map and be happy with that? Not having to fill up with E85 sounds like a nice change of pace.

You have lived the life of a tune and you are not ready to depart from that. If you were, you would have got rid of the car and bought something tame. It's in your blood. Moderation will be important. Enjoy a fast car but when you start pushing boundaries you know what can happen. My car is conservative and I would like it to be more..but I don't want the cost or headache. That is what you have to mediate--how much is good enough?

Tune...Eventually but keep it mild. And then know you can go kill mode and back again in 10 minutes or less.
After having a 145K mile N54 and getting a much lower 55K one, that's my plan. Right now I'm only doing small cosmetic mods slowly and eventually (1-2years hopefully lol) going more aggressive with tunes and performance. Since you already have the mods already just keep it mild tune with an aggressive map ready to go when you have to. |

This is a subjective/personal question your asking. My lines in the sand are the following. If i'm modding my DD, i'm conservatively aggressive. What the heck does that mean you ask, no meth, kept front kitties, all other bolt ons with E85 and a fairly aggressive ATR tune by me. The only time i think one should push beyond something like what i'm mentioning is if it's not a DD. JMO.

Run a JB4 with the pump flash, map 1. It's 15 psi, so it's quick and safe but nothing crazy.

Nice performance bump over stock plus JB4 safety features will prevent another failure. Log frequently and address issues as they occur.

Thanks for all the replies. The idea of going back to the JB4 is appealing for sure with the safety controls. I have had two of them. I will likely do that noe that I think of it.
One bummer is I flashed over my PTF Cobb map when I got the MHD like a dummy. Then the car broke and the dealership reprogrammed my DME. So my Cobb won't recognize my car (last time I tried). Anyone know if Cobb will work with me to unlock my device so I can sell or trade it? Would love to swap it for a used JB4 G5... |

We'd be happy to get you an MHD based map if you like as mild as you like or as aggressive as it would make sense. Let us know.

It's hard to say what really caused the issue. That being said you know there are thousands and thousands of guys with tunes and FBO without a problem putting on 100,000+ miles on their vehicles. A conservative tune with FBO seems like the best approach for you.
