BMW redesigned the 335d DEF / UREA tank!?!?
Hello everyone I am a new 335d owner (love the car!!) and I am very new to these forums. Well I think I paid too much for the car from a non BMW dealer, then two weeks later the SES light came on!!! Didn't purchase the after market warranty because they wanted $4600 for it!! but wondering if I should have....
Well with ALOT of reading on all the different forums and some help from some awesome people on the forums, I purchased an OBD/CAN cable and learned how to use INPA and NCSexpert... well it was the dreaded DEF tank codes. My 335d had 69,400 miles on it, and from the forums I learned it should be covered by the Calif Emissions Warranty. So last week I dropped it off at a BMW dealer and after 7 days they called me and said it was done, and it was all covered!! They said they replaced the tank and the tank pump. The SA started to apologize that it took so long and commented that the tank was hard to get because BMW just changed the part numbers (or something like that) and said it was because the tanks have been redesigned. Wonder if that means this tank last longer than 69k miles? Has anyone heard a similar story about the tank redesign? Also, can anyone point me to a good tutorial on how to remove the DEF tank I cant seem to find one and yes, I have looked. the reason being, eventually I would like to get in there and post some pics of the "new" tank and get some feedback from everyone. Thanks |

So I just read the below post and there are a couple of folks waiting for a redesigned tank....hmm this may have answered my own question, but I'm still curious about exactly what was redesigned.

I still dont see any direct evidence of a redesign on the parts websites

lol @ "a couple of folks" Last estimate i heard was above 1000.
As far as a redesign I have heard two stories. The first one being that the part was redesigned due to "high failure rates". The second is that it is the same part but had been manufactured with a defect which caused failures. I imagine the truth is somewhere inbetween those, but closer to the latter story. Also, I've been waiting for a "new" tank since June. It is hard for me to believe that you got one of the "new" units in less than a week, especially since every time i hear of a delay it's a delay from the part manufacturer in Germany. AFAIK no "new" units have made it to the states, but I only know what dealership is telling me. |
