Hi guys, yesterday I got a ticket from police in Slovakia for failing to completely stop at traffic lights which were not in use. Unfortunately the Stop sign wasnt very visible and I missed it

So in a few hundred metres they stopped me and I had to pay ?40 on the spot. They gave me a receipt for the fine, took some necessary details from me to fill out the fine etc..

The ?40 doesnt bother me really. What worries me though is the question if they will contact DVLA and I get points on my driving license.

Anyone able to shed light? cheers

As above. No worries. The "offence" was not committed in the UK.

I got taken to a cash point machine for an instant fine for speeding on a restricted section of the Autobahn in Germany. If I had been German I would have lost my licence. All I got was a fine (no points).

Loads I would suspect!

I got pulled over in Morocco driving to the Atlas mountains and was fined for speeding, they didn't have a speed gun, it came down to go where you wanted and pay or turn around.

They had moved up the road on the way back and tried to fine me 150 Dihram for not having my passport with me, I think £15 quid at the time. One recognised me and told the other to leave it as I think they might have pushed their luck enough with tourists that day.

I got pulled on the Atlas mountains in a bus. The tyres on the bus were so bald you could see steel coming through them. Worrying as there were generally no barriers preventing you falling down a cliff and there was evidence of a lot of vehicles that had done just that on route. Not a problem however with the police. They only wanted to take my camera away from me. For sure anything they got off you would be going straight into their back pocket.

Here in Slovakia they havent got a single speed camera. The bad news is though that they are sitting in their car with lights/engine switched off at different locations every night. Beware if you drive trough one day

Why do you say this is rubbish? It has happen to me so its from personal experience.

Directive (EU) 2015/413 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 11 March 2015 facilitating cross-border exchange of information on road-safety-related traffic offences

Even though it will be a few years until the UK participates fully in this system for pan-European electronic exchange of keeper details there are processes in place to ensure that you can still expect to be punished for traffic offences abroad.

The UK already has a bilateral agreement with Ireland and the Isle of Man for the exchange of registered keeper details to support enforcement activity.

The new directive only applies to offences where enforcement doesn't take place while the offender was in the country where the offence occurred.

Deposit schemes exist (effectively an on-the-spot fine) where local police can demand payment (cash/credit card) at the roadside as a deposit against a later issued fixed penalty charge or possible court prosecution.

In more extreme cases you can expect to have your driving licence taken away and a temporary driving ban imposed. This makes it very difficult to carry on with your holiday or sometimes even to return home.

Foreign drivers in the UK can also be subject to on the spot fines under the 2006 Road Safety Act.

Pffffft, i've lost count to the number of times i've set off speed cameras abroad!

Only thing that keeps me at 80mph now, is the roof box!

Do they not send you speeding tickets you have to pay?

Nope. As there is no agreement in place for the DVLA to provide any driver details to any European country. All other European countries swap driver info. Only the UK, ROI and Denmark opted out. However!! That has to change by May 2017 IIRC.
