Questions..

1. How much space do I need between the rear seats and the baffle or should I mount the MDF plush against the back seats.

2. Anything I can use to seal around the baffle? I don't have a template to work with so there may be a 1mm gap here or there... and that could be enough to ruin the sound.
No space needed, mount it flush against the back seat. This gives the baffle extra support and ensures that all of the front wave is funneled through the ski pass. No real need to seal the baffle, the back seat is already sealed nicely to the cabin. The major leaks you need to worry about are in the rear deck. I closed them off with Dynamat.

Two options for you:

ID15:
www.woofersetc.com/p-7449-id15-v3-d4-image-dynamics-15-dual-4-ohm-v3-subwoofer.html

JBL GTO 15"
http://www.rakuten.com/prod/harman-g...FUgWHwodPS8LMA

There are more positive reviews of people using the JBL, but pretty much all of them with 2 subs. I think given the track record of ID (and the looks) I'd go with them, plus it can take 100 more watts compared to the JBL. Since both are on close-out, I'd buy an extra one as a spare just in case.

I assume you need to under mount the sub and the thickness of the baffle ensures no interaction of the sub and seat during excursion?

If I could also ask if you think using sub/subs in this configuration with jehnert underseats would blend well? I've not installed the jehnerts yet but have read they are not the lowest playing of mid bass units? If an ib setup is all done by 50hz is would you end up with a lot of missing frequencys? the id's you've linked to would be great but I'm in the uk so shipment would probably double the cost! Not sure what is available in the uk but will have a look round

IB can play higher than any other setup. The problem is you will start to be able to locate the sub at frequencies higher than 50-60hz. That's why you want underseats that can take over at that frequency, and the Jehnerts will do that well.

Thanks for the swift response! Have you had any dealings with the fi audio ib3's? They are available in the uk and, although it's a hard question to answer should one 15 with around 500 watts rms be enough? I am aiming for a straight sq system.

Failing that I do have a pair of older Polk momo mm120's floating around, I wonder if they would do the job...

I'm sure the Fi will do great. There was a UK user a few years back who used to frequent this forum who installed (I think) a Fi 12 IB. You may want to do a search and see what you find. He seemed pretty happy with it but I would definitely recommend the 15. The more cone area, the better.

For some reason I think a 15" fi q will do better in the trunk than a real ib sub. Also I wouldnt get the internal leads.

I've had Jehnerts for while. Normally I have my subs and underseats crossed at 55hz. There were a few times where I had to take my subs out and I would high pass the Jehnerts at 35hz 24db/octave. They were fine powered by an xd600/6 which does 75watts at 4 ohms. Im sure with more power they wouldn't have liked it.

You're probably right, lower Qts, stronger motor, higher power handling - will probably do great but will need more power than the IB sub.

Sounds interesting, I have to say that I really need to research this as I'm not particularly familiar with the various parameters and what they affect. I have noticed from a little bit of self study today though that it seems to be more recommended to aim for something with a lower fs, and it seems in the case of the fi's that the ib3 would be more suitable at 22 ish rather than 30 odd for the q or am I missing something? Is suspect the ib3 would align better with my sub amp, a sinfoni 150.2.

Can I ask why you wouldn't recommend the leads as an option?

Except the ib3 is designed for a larger volume than the trunk. I doubt the fs for that sub would be 22 hz in a car.

I don't reccomend the internal leads because I had a 15" fi btl(internal leads werent optional back then) and I burnt up the tinsel leads on it. I got an upgraded psi recone kit that had 3 sets of external leads instead of the 2 internal leads the sub came with. I never had a problem with that sub after that. You would probably be fine with the internal leads that was with a lot more power. I think the external leads cool off better and don't have to flex so much.
