N54 oil leak from head gasket?
Hi peeps
As the title indicates, anyone had/noticed this problem before? I notice fresh oil stains/minor seepage that runs along the head gasket on the intake side everytime I drive the car for extended periods of time (say driving to work, which is ~45km away). So far I've changed the OFHG (twice) and recently the VCG, but the stains came back as soon as I drove back from the work shop (~60km drive) after getting the VCG (and some other work done). I've taken it to 3 different shops so far, 1st one said it was OFHG (but I already had that changed some <20k km ago), 2nd one said something about my turbos leaking (but I fail to see how that will result in oil stains showing up on the other side of the engine and in a place higher up than the turbos) and the 3rd one commented on the oil seepage from the HG while I was there getting the VCG and belts done, but said it seem to be a common issue with some high km euros (mine had over 110k km so far) and just keep an eye on it for now. Any other possible oil leak place I should check/address, I swear this engine seem to be made from swiss cheese as far as oil sealing goes and bloody hell my Skyline's ancient RB25 engine hardly leaks at all and it's over twice as old. Besides this minor seepage, which I only noticed due to having BMS DCIs (otherwise the stock airbox would have blocked the view to the HG all together), otherwise car runs fine, starts up 1st time with no troubles and pulls hard when I put my foot down and I don't notice any oil mixing with coolant or vise versa as the common signs of a blown HG. Rant over.

ofhg has 2 x gaskets. did they replace both? also the 2 oil cooler lines that go into the ofhg have 2 o rings check for oil around those lines. if its not those check valve cover gasket.
I also had a rb25det. not 1 oil leak and it took a beating. |

You need to get closer to where the oil leak source is coming from. It could be a crack in the Valve Cover itself if you've replaced everything, or you could have kinked the VCG on install (very common).

sorry but may I ask if the head gasket = valve cover gasket (rocker cover gasket)?
Just want to double check the terminology I have got it replaced by statutory warranty. |

Head gasket is the seal between the top of the block/cylinders to the head (i.e. bottom of 'head'). Valve cover gasket is the rubber seal that goes on the top side of the head to seal the valve cover. |

Well, looks like 'majority' of the oil leak is coming from the VCG, being driving around normally for about a week now and I now only notice faint signs of oil seep along the HG, where as before there would be collection of oil near the front side of the engine (intake side, under the intake mainfold) every couple of days (see 1st photo):

There's still a minor oil seepage there too, but no major leaks, (before the different sized o-rings, the entire front of the engine would have oil splashes after a drive to work). EDIT: I did notice a bit of oil coat on my Forge DVs after my failed attempt at cleaning them (dam buggers won't screw open at all ![]()

I read some article saying that white smoke will come out from tailpipe if the head gasket is blown/broken?
does that imply that if there isn't any white smoke coming from the tailpipe, then your head gasket is not faulty? |

Valve cover gasket is normal and a few hundred. Oil filter gasket also. Head gasket is so expensive it's almost cheaper to buy and install a used block and super rare.
