Been a few times I've walked up to my car to find the passenger headlight washer just not fully retracted like in the picture, is this the motor slowly failing? Has anyone had to pay out for a new one before? How much did it set them back?

Fairly common there's a few threads on here, mine does it although i pulled and pushed it around a bit and sprayed a bit of wd40 in there and it seems ok for now. Ultimately needs replacing though.

Although now I have said that, i will go outside to find mine sticking out again no doubt

I'll have a fiddle and get some WD40 in there at some point see if it helps at all, and yeah unfortunately I have mixed the washer fluids, although after recently seeing a thread about mixing them I've tried to keep it to one brand!

There is no motor in there, it is just fluid pressure that pushes them out. They are fairly cheap and easy to replace. Could just be a bit of dirt on the sleeve causing it to stick. Pull it out by hand and blast it with a hose and clean it off.

several rasons why they do this but at least they haven't pinged off. Dirt and overspill from washer fluid that gets caught in the channel below the cover is the main reason if there's moisture under the cover that sits in the recess and it freezes say overnight the moment the headlight washer reacts if its well and truly stuck then they sadly end up like yours or worse still sitting on hte road somewhere.

Crap design. WD40 spray's one solution heard of a smeer of vaseline too as it acts a water tight barrier but other than that best way forward until MOT time is to deactive them

I've never had an issue mixing washer fluids. The critical part though, is you must ensure the concentration is decent. If theres not enough methanol in the mixture, you get "growth" in the tank, which turns into slime and blocks up the jets etc.

Many of the screenwash products suggest that in summer you can run 1:20 or something equally ludicrous, and many of the supermarket brands are so diluted already that running them neat is still not enough to stop them freezing in winter.

I use Quantum stuff from TPS (VAG trade place). Its £2.50 a gallon, and comes in a decent concentration. I use 1:4 mix during summer and 1:1 during winter.

Think I'll start using a higher concentration mix on it then, I usually use about 1:6 most of the year round

Been considering taking the fuse out as I get so frustrated if my cars all clean, if I use the screen wash they just leave awful soapy smears all up the bonnet!

I'll give them a pull and see if there's anything obvious that need cleaning, may end up dismantling properly and cleaning them that way

Silicone spray lube, one that dries

I noticed mine doing this the other day. Along with my door handles sticking. I used the silicone lube on the handles and they are like new now so i might just use a bit on those too and see how it goes.

My near side washer does this as well. But think i'll just pull the fuse 😃
