Loose air intake duct - what to do?
Hi all; E92 330d;
I noticed the other day when I was cleaning the engine bay that the air duct from the suction hood to the air filter was loose. The male end with the moulded flanges wasn't in place and just sort of hanging there. I put it back into place and tried to get it to "click" into the female end of the suction hood (i.e. part 13 pushed into part 12) http://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/show...diagId=13_1161 However, every time I drive the car, I notice it just pops straight back out. I push it back into place, go for a drive, lift up the bonnet/hood and it's just hanging back out there. Any suggestions on why it's happening and how to keep it place? (other than superglue...) Can't post pics at the moment, will try this evening. |

Screws, rivets, etc, there are plenty of ways to retain it
But if it's popping off, that could be due to excessive movement, are the engine mounts ok?

Interestingly I looked at mine today and that had also popped out!
This would explain the rattle noise I was getting from cold at low revs/light throttle, was a b1tch to get back in, but clipped back into place and the rattle has gone, result. I'll check it after I've driven to work & back tomorrow, but if it keeps popping out I'll just put a screw through to keep it in place. Could just be that the plastic has contracted/hardened with age, so no longer grips as well as it should.

Lol seems like I'm not the only one eh! I think it's either that the plastic has degraded or the bit where it connects to in the suction hood has a crack or some other issue. A pain in the backside either way... I might try the pvc or good ol' duct tape approach!
I think the high mass flow rate of air makes it pop off. |

I'd just use a couple of black screws, very discreet, easily removable if that air feed has to come off, etc...
I'll check mine when I get home tonight and see if it's still in place.

Well I just got fed up and used some gorilla tape. Just kept popping out every time I went for a drive. Doesn't look pretty but does the trick for now!

Checked mine tonight, driven nearly 50 miles, it had moved slightly, but not popped out, but if left over time it will eventually do so I imagine.
So I'll fix that when I have some time and it's not dark & raining!

Yeah, definitely do it even if it's a bit of tape like I did. noticed a huge difference in my car - gear changes are incredibly smooth now. Had my brother in the car for the first time (biggest critic ever lol) even he commented how smooth it felt

I'll be using a couple of black screws, it's fairly secure, but will creep over time, so they'll prevent that
