Long cranks, normal???
Hey guys,
I own a 2007 335i and i have had a lot of money spent trying to cure a long cranking issue. The car has never coded for it and when running seems to run fine. However on a warm start (run to operating temp then parked a few hours) ill sometimes get a 2 second crank. Ive had my coils and injectors checked, new hpfp less than 500 miles ago and major cylinder head and camshaft rebuild / replacement. Timing was checked and set too. My dealership are getting tired of me always having my car in there 7 times in 6 months or so and a total of 8-9k of work but everything but the long cranks is fixed. Do i ignore the cranks till it codes or do i press for it to be resolved? Last edited by NRudy; 11-29-2015 at 04:04 AM.. |

Typically long cranks are down to a failing HPFP. Surely the dealer will know that and could check the pump's performance?

My last hpfp didnt fault and was within acceptable perameters, they replaced it due to the hpfp puma case so its all new but i still on the odd occasion get a long crank.

hmm. This is usually hpfp, unless your lpfp has had it too.
How old is your battery? It might not be delivering enough current to get everything going... |

I imagine the battery has never been changed but i doubt that to be the cause, generally the car starts first time, when running its fine, never cut out or dropped power. Once it starts its fine i can turn it off and on and it will fire up perfectly its just on occasional starts.
It feels like one of those mechanical gremlins because the main dealer nor indy can find it or replicate it. Only reason the main dealer took me seriously is i recorded it on my phone when it did it. Managed 2 videos in a week when i caught it. |

Is that what we define as a long crank? 2 seconds?I'd have said 4-5secs was long, but not 2??

lol count out 2 seconds and imagine an engine turning over for that amount... it's quite long... crank should be under a second...

I had a similar issue recently. First I had the car checked for any outstanding codes, then I changed the battery to a Bosch S5. Turned out to be lazy starter the starter motor dropping voltage down to about 9.5v upon start up.
