Engine Malfunction

Hello,

I have searched all threads regarding an engine malfunction and mostly found issues related to mods.
I am posting as I have a stock 335I 2011 with the N55.
Recently I got the engine malfunction, reduced power...orange in color.
I have tried to have all codes pulled and read and there were no trouble codes, or pending codes.
The light turns off every time I restart the car, however comes back on almost every time I drive.

I am looking for help to diagnose without taking the vehicle to the dealer.

Thanks.

Which cable and app are you using to read codes? When I first got my car, I used generic cables, Bluetooth dongles and generic apps. They failed to read BMW-specific codes. I then got Cobb and could finally read properly. A few months ago I switched to MHD and I can read even more codes.
I also use Carly for BMW to read some of the electrical codes.

As soon as it triggers the lights , check codes b4 u turn car off. Hopefully generic code readers will pick them up like that . I know a lot of times when you cycle the ignition, it wipes the codes out , depending on what they r

If using a generic scanner many times it will not pull the code. You need a BMW specific one, like the Bavarian Technic Cable, etc. If you don't have one or access to one best to take it to an independent mechanic for them to scan. They shouldn't charge a lot. Might be something as simple as a misfire.

Since you got the Drivetrain Malfunction light the code will be stored in the ECU.

So I ended up taking the car to the dealer as I dont have access to a code reader. Turns out it was something to do with the wastegate actuator.
It is fixed now.
I am looking to spend about 50 dollars on amazon...give or take for a BMW specific reader. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Do you know of a specific reader I can get on amazon that will read BMW codes for around 50 dollars?

I have looked at this and am not looking to spend that much, and I am hoping to use it for more than just my car. This is my biggest problem as there is a limit on the cars it will read unless I spend a ridiculous amount on one.

Do not waste your money on an amazon cable. They will not correctly read BMW specific codes/shadow codes etc.

As stated above, Bav Tech is the best for stock applications. Will do more than read codes.

However this tool is becoming obsolete for code reading purposes since most tuning platforms have this capability integrated in. So if you plan on a tune, don't waste your money on a scanner tool.

I got a K+Dcan cable from bimmer software for $40, www.BMWSW.com and MHD app on Android.

I have a custom tune from Wedge so I've never used their off the shelf (OTS) flash maps, but others here have praised the maps.

Another app that I like is Carly for BMW. I use it to effortlessly code various things like lights, windows, hard top, etc. It also deep-reads BMW-specific codes.

K+Dcan cable , and get INPA software. That will fit your 50$ budget . That's assuming you have a laptop .
