Prices of BMWs in North America

I'm sure this has been mentioned before but have you seen the prices of BMWs in the USA.

The 328i has a list price of $32,400 - that is basically about £16,500 for a 330iSE. They get a better stereo as standard as well.

Quite some difference to the prices in the UK - clearly they don't cost much to make and hence the reason why BMW continues to make so much profit - at least from buyers in the UK - i need a lie down.

How do they make them so cheap!

It doesn't work out that way. The average household income in the USA is only slightly less than that of the UK, but cars are half the price.

This isn't down to taxation - it's half the price AFTER you net off the local taxes.

Plus they get houses that are 3 times the size of ours and proper dental care.

Car manufacturers have always have always sold cars for what they'll sell for not how much they cost to produce, they routinely subsidise from one market and model to another.

If anyone believes that the price difference between an 320d and an M3 is a fair reflection of the true difference in cost to design & produce then I'd love to be selling things to you.

We pay a lot for BMWs (and most other things) because we are stupid enough to do so, because we tend to equate cost=quality, and we have no home based competition to speak of. Sadly none of these things can be changed.

I totally agree .... an e90 318i msport is £10K less than an e90 335i msport

But .. the only significant difference between the cars is the engine. The 335i engine can't actually cost £10k more .. it just can't.

So BMW's margin on the 335i must be greater than that on the 318i

And both the 318 and 335 are probably subsidising the low cost in the US!

Americans don't suffer being ripped off, the Brits just have a moan and get on with it.

An irreversible disease unfortunately.

I went to the states in December for our company technical exchange and so ordered a lot of Xmas pressies from Amazon.com to be delivered to the work address out there.
Some of the larger items price difference:

Canon HD camcorder $720 - price here £600
Tag Watch $2900 - price here £2500
Fishing Rod $600 - price here £600

Software is also a rip-off here too. Adobe and Microsoft are using the exact same tactics of £1 = $1. When challenged they say that the extra cost is for the european language versions. Yeah right it's really that hard to add the odd 'u' here and there to convert to English.

With the dollar rate being over 2 to 1 at the time it meant that nearly everything was bought for as little as half price.

It is absolutely disgusting that we have to pay so much in this country but what can we do about it???
