My AT's Slipping! Need Help. Can I Fit Older Model Years Into My Car?
Hey, everyone:
Got into a bit of an accident with my car and the transmission is slipping pretty badly. I'm driving an early 2009MY auto 335i. After looking online for a bit, I'm a little confused about which specific transmission is in my car. My local shop told me I need a new transmission, so I've been on a search for one, but I have a few questions: ZF 6HP19/ 6HP19Z / 6HP21 What's the difference between all of these? From my knowledge, the 6HP19 was an earlier generation of the auto transmission that you'd find in the 07-08 models? 6HP21 would be found in 2009+? Are you able to interchange those transmissions? There's a few transmissions up for sale in my area, but their donors are from 2007 and 2008 models. Will it work if I pulled mine out and put in ones from those vehicles? I've never had to get such a big job done on my car before, so I'm looking to learn as much as possible from this situation. Any advice, tips, or tricks would be greatly appreciated! |

My car is of a December 06 build date and it had the 6hp21 trans code. I very recently swapped in a transmission from a 2009 so I could do the alpina trans flash and it worked fine with no problems at all. Was literally plug n play. Remember tho if you get a gearbox that's pre 03/07 build date you won't be able to flash it with the alpina software if u ever wanted to.

I know this doesn't answer your questions but I'd get a second opinion on the transmission. Is your vehicle heavily modified or stock? These tranmissions take a lot of abuse to slip and it's usually after a boat load of power, in excess of 500WTQ.

No warning lights on my dash when I try to get her running. It had lights when I initially got into my accident, but the transmission oil pan was fixed up and there's no lights now. I'll put the car into drive and my car will sit there in park forever. Haven't scanned for any codes, as I'm pretty confident that a new transmission is required. Would like to believe my shop isn't lying to me, too. The estimates I've gotten for rebuilds from various shops are more expensive than buying another transmission and doing the swap. |

It's been proven that it is not worth the amount of money and time it takes to swap to MT in our cars. The cost is well above $13,000 and that's even quoted from a guy who is really close with a good shop to perform the task. I myself would do it on my own, but the time to locate all the parts, wires, etc and having to swap out the cluster, it's easier to just swap to a DCT transmission from the 2010-2012's. But even that costs near 8-9k.
