Unhappy Error P0128 - replaced thermostat - cold heater

Hi there,

I got a 2006 BMW 330xi, about 6 months ago. The radiator had coolant leak (and a burning oil smell), so my mechanic (non-dealer) changed the radiator. A few days after, I got the engine error: p0128 (Coolant Temperature Below Thermostat Regulating Temperature). My mechanic (again non-dealer) replaced the thermostat, and flushed the coolant. After a couple of days, the error p0128 showed up again. Still my heater does not blow hot air. I check my coolant temperature while driving (with OBD2 & Torque Android app) and it does not even reach 80°C (176 ºF) after 20 minutes of driving. When I turn on the heater the temperature drops to 65°C (149 ºF) degrees, and the heater blows barely warm air. I live in Toronto, today it was -15°C (5 ºF) and I had not heater! Help please!

- What do you guys recommend me to do? Could it be the coolant temperature sensor? If the coolant temperature sensor is faulty, can I still get cold air from the heater?

- What is "Engine Operating Temperature"? Is the same as coolant temperature? What is the normal range?

- Could an un-updated ECU causing this?

- As I understand the car has 2 coolant temperature sensor? Correct? What do they do? I mean why two? Could anyone send me image on where to locate them on a E90, (2006 330xi)?

Thanks a lot!

Don't take it to a non-dealer, pay the $100 and have a real diagnostic done by the dealership to give you the real story. Also ask them for all the software updates plus if there are any open recalls on the car. It's probably cheaper than your non-dealer toss ing parts at the problem.

Also try to find a better Indy who specialize in your car, preferably an Indy who has a car in his family that's a e9x
