325i N52 engine overheat and oil leak fix
Brief description of recent experience, may help others.
325i MSport N52 engine (6 cyl) Petrol 91,000miles Sudden overheat on motorway Red Overheat warning light on Heater blowing cold Stopped car, nothing obvious. Limped a bit further.. Boil over. Recovery back. Investigation showed no circulation of water. Water pump on this model is electric. Pump can be activated by putting ignition on, heaters on max heat, fan speed 1. Press throttle pedal to floor. This should stimulate pump into action. On my car nothing happened... ![]() Faulty water pump. Waterpump and new thermostat ordered from bmpartsstore.com (recommended) Thermostat has to come off to get pump out so its worth changing.. Around 4 hours to fit. Pump activated again. Pump working! During repair, noticed oil leak from cam cover. Checked bolts. Found 3 bolts had snapped! (common fault because of BMW over torque in factory) Managed to use stud extractor to remove, replaced with genuine BMW bolts sourced off ebay. (bolts are single use) Tested car. All fine, oil leak fixed. ![]() First major fault since ownership. Pump was expensive but happy now its back up and running. |
