What's the correct battery "Group Size" for a fully loaded E90 LCI sedan… ?
I have a 2011 335i M-sport sedan that is loaded to the brim with every option that was available for this chassis including the HK audio package.
The original (lead acid) battery with the white shell is toast now. And everyday I get a "increased battery discharge" message. So after reading many car battery tests & reports, I'm going to replace it with a nice AGM Die-Hard battery. And yes I will be getting this new unit registered & coded (since this will have a larger reserve & more CCA's). The factory unit says 720 CCA & 90 AH. Some people say a "Group 94R" which has 800 CCA & a "Group 49" which has 850 CCA will do. But so far no one has mentioned which is better for the high fitting compartment of the E90 sedans. (1.) I would like to know which is more ideal (in other words, which fits better)… ? (2.) Or are the bodies of these two the exact same? (3.) If so, would having the one with more CCA hurt the car in the long run… ? Thank you in advance… ! |

Thank you ctuna. The only thing I'm not sure about is how I'm going to get that unit coded. Apparently the the Group 49 has (170 RC) which means / translates to 101 AH. And the listing for AGM batteries only goes to 90 AH…
If the amp hours listing doesn't have one for the DieHard AGM battery I may use, is there anything I can do to work around it… ? |

Thank you for the help. And that makes sense that the (AH) on the battery can be higher but not lower then highest code listing available. Greatly appreciate your help well. ;-)

There is such a thing as close enough

I think if you meet or exceed you will be OK. The Carly app is the easy way to do it but they charge you extra for the battery programming option. Also there are places that will do it in San Jose elliot at detail addicts is one of the places. and you could get some other codings at the same time. See the coding sub forum he is a vendor there. Also don't use battery back up it blows fuses and don't close the trunk with the battery out. Your battery should have lasted 6 years so you might want to consider a battery tender. Note also
Note also since you are changing from lead acid to AGM I
would be more concerned with getting the car reprogrammed for your battery ASAP. Last edited by ctuna; 01-13-2016 at 08:10 PM.. |

Absolutely. I will be getting the car coded (some say programmed) & registered right away to take full advantage of the new AGM (92 AH) battery from BMW.

Does anyone know if a Group 49 will fit all E90 chassis?
Have been looking at various sites and they all only list a group 48 for my 2006 330XI. Would like to be able to put the larger group 49 battery in. This is my winter car, so the higher the AH rating the better. I have the Carly app, so can register it at the 90 AH AGM spec, which I have managed to find at a decent price locally. |

i installed a group 49 in my 328. it will fill the whole battery basin, the hold down clamp placement can be located in several locations to accomodate the different length batteries.
