When I said I 'give it some gentle revs' [whilst idling], I am talking no more than an extra 400rpm, up to around 1500 (cold start idles around 1100 anyway). This puts no strain on the engine. If anything a little extra gentle revs increases the oil pressure and help cold oil circulation.

In addition, our frosts are only ever just below freezing - never anywhere near -18!

Steve, thank you for taking the time and effort to highlight some of the issues you have seen - your experience is an asset. Very grateful.

I must say you could see all of that and be overwhelmed. I'm hoping I have a simple resolution!

Should add, today I woke up to another frost (-2), started the car at 06:20 and idle was smooth a silk from the off. The inconsistency with the N54 is something I guess I will have to get used too.

The S50, S54, S65 were all super-consistent!

When I had an issue with mine it was a combination of needing new injectors and plugs along with a new valve cover due to it being split.

Check the valve cover for leaks, the move onto plugs, followed by coils etc.
It could also be the low pressure fuel sensor or even the high pressure fuel sensor.

The only problem is that if it's already throwing codes and you take out the warranty, BMW will not fix the issue related to those codes on the warranty as they were a pre-existing fault. How do I know? Well lets just say it cost me over £1300 in parts to fix mine.

Is that what a 335i misfire sounds like?! Christ I'd be in tears if I could hear that!!!

That was on low fuel with at least 1 leaking injector and a cracked valve cover (all 6 plugs and injectors were soaked in oil).

Don't worry I wasn't very happy either but that's why I recommend people get the warranty ASAP instead of waiting 6 months like I did.

It's not clear(to me) what warranty you're talking about Dann. And will they check the car to see there's no issue? I got no codes now according to some fancy obd ipad...

For my personal use do you recommend carsoft? I'm used to multiecuscan (fiat alfa etc)

No worries re the time, thing I've learnt and seen for myself as an owner is with these cars it would seem you have too, to a degree go in with eyes wide open.

Everything so far I've replaced has been mentioned time and time again on many forums and on the internet in general, these cars have known issues, BMW and dare I say it the component suppliers that supply them parts have had to constantly reinvent their products to solve the various issues these cars face, water pumps, injectors, HPFP's, Turbo's are all parts that have had multiple supersession modifications appled to them and if I can pick one part out of all of these that causes one of the biggest bones of contention, namely the turbo's.

Despite Mitsubishi updating the design time and time again the old wastegate rattle issue still seems to come up even on units replaced with the latest set up, yet the aftermarket has a proven solution that's already gone to market, so why can't the manufacturer of the product look at the isdue look at the aftermarket solution and solve the issue through design and material specification that would save BMW needless turbo replacement time and money and this has been going on for years.

When I see a customers car with an issue I kind of know and can understand what they are going through plus as an owner and someone who's gone through the various problems these cars face understand the potentual outlay financially that could come up and usually money wise these cars cost.

Warranty is key, to protect you, which is a shame as overall the cars great, when on song you've got everything you'd ever need, but when they play up they sure do play up, re warranty the BMW products very good but in execution at the dealer end sometimes there can be issues as we've seen and as has been written, therefore decent warranties from a 3rd party supplier and say a knowledgable Indy might be the way forward but chose your warranty company very carefully and look at claim limits, exclusions and T's & C's WarrantyWise/WarrantyDirect seem the best two
