battery replacement

so I just replaced my battery and when I hooked up the new one all of my settings were still the same. radio, clock, etc.

how does that work? shouldn't that stuff have been lost while there was no battery connected?

I installed a new OEM battery (200 from my local dealer) and registered it with the Carly for BMW app.

A large number of the electronics either retain battery power in a capacitor or store settings in non-powered (non volatile) memory. You'd hate for the car to forget what type of engine is has when you change the battery, right? It is up to the engineers to determine whether or not to try and keep these settings when battery power is lost.
