metallic ticking on idle

Anyone able to find a resolution to our famous intermittent metallic ticking on idle ... I've a few observations :
- frequency is greatly reduced with fresh oil (I use 0w 40 castrol ll01 from walmart lol), also tried Mobil1 ll01, no difference, M1 was slightly thinner
- noise recurs more in hot outside temperatures compared to colder
- as everyone else experienced, slight tap on the pedal diminishes the sound
- no metallic residue in the oil filter seen by naked eye

I searched and couldn't find any resolutions on the forum.. let's get this one out of theyN54 gurus!!!! you guys rock!!

I had this for the first time the other night. Car was up to temp, outside temp only 2c. Slightest touch on throttle put it away. Stressed me out though , I hate any noise from my car!

Wonder if my 0w40 oil is too thin. Might use 0w30 next time.

Maybe some of the hydraulic tappets (11337548690) are sticky. Have you tried using Liqui Moly's engine flush during oil changes ($12 on Amazon)? I previous had clacking noise that sounded like repeated racking of a handgun's slide. It took 3 flushes and oil changes spread over 12mths before the noise completely disappeared.

I'll try that - I did use amsoils engine flush, then my oil level sensor starting acting up so I stopped using flush's

I had same issue I believe we all do. I switched to motul 8100 5w40. Car drives smoother and is quieter.
