metallic ticking on idle
Anyone able to find a resolution to our famous intermittent metallic ticking on idle ... I've a few observations :
- frequency is greatly reduced with fresh oil (I use 0w 40 castrol ll01 from walmart lol), also tried Mobil1 ll01, no difference, M1 was slightly thinner - noise recurs more in hot outside temperatures compared to colder - as everyone else experienced, slight tap on the pedal diminishes the sound - no metallic residue in the oil filter seen by naked eye I searched and couldn't find any resolutions on the forum.. let's get this one out of theyN54 gurus!!!! you guys rock!!

I had this for the first time the other night. Car was up to temp, outside temp only 2c. Slightest touch on throttle put it away. Stressed me out though , I hate any noise from my car!
Wonder if my 0w40 oil is too thin. Might use 0w30 next time. |

Maybe some of the hydraulic tappets (11337548690) are sticky. Have you tried using Liqui Moly's engine flush during oil changes ($12 on Amazon)? I previous had clacking noise that sounded like repeated racking of a handgun's slide. It took 3 flushes and oil changes spread over 12mths before the noise completely disappeared.
